Well to say the least, when I left for this bridge occupation my stomach was doing all kinds of summersaults, and given events at other cities today... I was going over all kinds of tactical thinking. Yup, one of those things you learn working the streets as a medic and quite never leaves you. To say that my mind was put at ease when I walked near the Mission Bay Information center would be a lie. There were easily, I am not kidding, 30 police cars, one command van... and more than a few motorcycles. Given what has been going on... yup, that send my blood pressure up and my mouth was so dry it is not even funny.
Both Occupy and the Central Labor Council negotiated with the police and they agreed to let us occupy the bridge for a little while. So it went fine
Who was present? Veterans for Peace, Move on. Occupy San Diego, The Central Labor Council and other allies.
We occupied the northern side of the bridge and people hung signs and drivers honked in support.
In the breaking news department, you are getting almost from the horse's mouth... the lawsuit that Canvas for a Cause and the National Lawyers Guild filed on behalf of Occupy San diego, as well as our former city lawyer, Mike Aguirre is scheduled to go on the docket on Tuesday Afternoon. It has, to make this short, to do with an ordinance that prevents putting anything on public space. It was meant to prevent trash cans and other things, but it is being used to prevent political signs... and it is not equally enforced. Yes, the Legal Team informed the Gathered audience. about 500 people, of this tonight.
It is good... and some of the BS will change for other BS. As to Occupy Mission Bay, as I left they were holding their First General Assembly... I will do the post at my site and will add photos... there are some great photos.
Oh and like Mr. Frank Luntz (local democrat) said, "Thank you SDPD, we love you when you do your job right."
Now I understand that SOME OWSers have given up on the voting booth. Let me tell you... the people today at the bridge... most of them are voters... and most of them are democrats too. And most of them are coming out to the streets because they are pissed. Let me introduce you to Bertha Poppeny. She was clear about why she was out there today, and she is not a young bird either. She's lost 96% of her retirement account in the WS casino. As she put it, "Corporate failure and I have lost 96% of my savings started during the depression."
Now tell me that is a young hippie, drug addled hippie. In fact, she is a catholic priest, (you heard right... it's a splinter movement) and a retired teacher. No, she won't be on the pavement tonight... but she will be there in spirit.
I will also introduce you to another protester. She is about my age... but on a walker. She had recent surgery. She came out "because sometimes you need to come out of the house, and this is a worthy cause."
Yup, these are the hippies I saw today...
I will post this momentarily in usual place for photos too.
There, photos
