Retail backlash over Thanksgiving night openings
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/11/19/BUM91M18LS.DTL

Valerie Brunmeier of San Jose plans a festive feast for her family on Thanksgiving, but two of her sons will have to hustle off to their retail jobs at local malls later that night.

"How do you relax when you know you're heading out the door at 10 p.m. or so to go to work, and work all night long?" she said.

This year more big-box stores than ever are opening on Thanksgiving night to get a leg up on Black Friday, the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

Target, Best Buy, Kohl's, Gap, Walmart, Toys R Us and Macy's are among the major retailers that plan to fling open their doors early this season. Some stores plan to open at 8 or 9 p.m. Thursday, while others will open a few hours later at the stroke of midnight, trying to jump-start sales amid an uncertain economic climate.

1. The bottom line is if people don't show up to stop the stores will stop being open those times.
Just don't go.

3. It's the War on Thanksgiving
They don't give a rats ass about Thanksgiving or families or they wouldn't create a situation that deliberately disrupts the most family friendly holiday of the year in the name of squeezing the last few remaining bucks out of American consumers.

I'm sure Bill O'Reilly will be right on top of this with one of his hard hitting op ed pieces.

4. My T-day
Will be on December 1st, thats when I get paid. Ran out of cash because my old computer died, and I had to get a new one. I can't afford to buy any food, until then. Its a good thing I have some stuff stocked up, for times such as these. I have lots of Japanese Sushi rice, also Brown rice, and Bokchoy as a veggie. I also have a bag of Nori, for rolling my own Kappa rolls. (Brown rice doesn't work well, so I mix in Japanese Sushi rice to give it added stickyness.)

As for Turkey, I will forfeit this year. December 1st, I am having a garlic Crab Dinner! I will be so ready for it!

5. I worked retail for 23 years. I have done everything from
stocker, cashier, lead cashier, customer service, etc. Over the years things have gotten more and more ridiculous. Corporate expects you to give up any thought of a life. And many of the customers...well, let's just say I called the Nazi shoppers. They would gas the competition if they thought they could get a better price or the last of some item.

6. Visiting France now - Stores close from 12:30 - 15:30
Granted we're in a resort town, but still. Restaurants close, stores close.

You see this a lot in November/December/January - "Fermé pour congé annuelle" - Closed for annual vacation.

In the summer you'll see the same in Paris.

People are looking pretty relaxed and pretty prosperous.

10. "Some retailers pull back from Black Friday arms race"
With stores racing to open ever earlier on Thanksgiving (Wal-Mart’s doors will open at 10 p.m.!), a backlash is growing, with some retailers and analysts questioning the madness.

“The lunacy of opening at 12 midnight or even earlier on Thanksgiving evening shows that this whole Black Friday thing has run out of legs,” said IDC Retail Insights program director Greg Girard. “Black Friday is a race to the bottom, and it’s just become another ad avenue.”
