Officials outraged after police spoof video goes viral
Officials outraged after police spoof video goes viral

WEST COVINA, CA (CBS Los Angeles) - City officials have promised swift punishment for whomever they find was involved in an online video that spoofs the West Covina Police Department.

The video depicts actors dressed as officers harassing a civilian at gunpoint and shooting in the air as they speed away.

"While we can see that the intent was a joke, at the same time, perception by the public is very important to us because we are professional," Cpl. Rudy Lopez said. "We don't want anyone to be misled."

...

"The city council has directed its attorneys and staff to contact the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office to evaluate if there's any criminal to be prosecuted and to proceed with all available civil remedies to recoup the cost of this misuse of public property, including all investigative and disciplinary cost associated therein," Glasman said.

8. To be fair, Benny Hill didn't borrow actual Army rovers without permission.

The real issue seems to be that the two police cars used in the video are actual Covina property, and the uniforms they wore are actual city issued uniforms that still belonged to the city. They made use of city property and vehicles without permission.

Reminds me of a situation years ago where a police officer was fired when she posed nude on the hood of her patrol car for a magazine. She wasn't fired for the posing, but was fired because she used the city-owned car (with the city logo) as a prop without authorization. When you're a public employee, personal use of public property is a big no-no.

11. Cops use public vehicles/properrty for their own use all the time, illegally.
Of course, they will enforce the rules in this instance.

Wake the fuck up.

3. We can see that it was intended as a joke, but we're going to act very much like the cops in the vid
Disaster. The video was actually pretty funny... it seemed lame at first, but I actually laughed at the punchline.
