re: press conference: the nypd blew up a car to show what their suspect MIGHT do?
i'm not sure i've ever witnessed such a thing before.....

New York (CNN) -- Authorities have arrested a man they claim was plotting to detonate pipe bombs in and around New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday night.

The intended targets of Jose Pimentel, 27, were U.S. military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as U.S. postal facilities and police in New York and Bayonne, New Jersey, according to Bloomberg and New York
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The suspect was described by Bloomberg as an "al Qaeda sympathizer," though he is not believed to have ever worked with or received training from anyone in that terrorist organization.

1. I missed the presser. Did they seriously preemptively blow up a car?
As in to show people who have never seen TV or a movie in their life what blowing up a car means?

Please tell me this is a joke!?

5. presser on MSNBC site.
It is painful to watch, tho.
Bloomberg is dressed in "alert orange"
Then he inserts as many terra terra terra buzzwords as he possibly can
calls the guy they arrested YESTERDAY both a "lone wolf" AND "al-kada" sympathizer,
mentions 9-11 more times that Gulliani on speed
then the Chief of Police steps forward to repeat all the buzzwords.and somewhere in there, they solemnly show a video of a newish car blowing up, after reporting the had the guy under surveillance for months, if not longer.
So he was no real danger to anyone.
Smoke and mirrors and distraction from OWS.

10. Oh for the love of pete.
I couldn't even get to the 1:30 mark. Orange jumpsuit sweater? US troops and post offices? Here's what a car bomb looks like?

For fuck's sake, at least wag the dog had a plot. This was nothing but a bunch of CGI and sound bytes.

I'm embarrassed for them.

13. You missed the numerous references to "NYPD anti-terrorist" accomplishments
and how great "NYPD" is, glory and brave and etc.
They had it all: Mom,. Apple Pie, "good guys" "bad guys" and Bloomberg saving us all from death and destruction.

I choked up.
Then I threw up.

4. He wanted to put terror in the hearts of citizens
So they blew up a car and ran the tape prime time on Sunday, so all the kids can see it. Bloomberg deals in fear and cheap theatrics because he has nothing else, and he knows he is becoming one of the most hated men in America. A few months ago, people wanted him to run for President, now he's the definition of a craven toady.

18. Apparently the FBI wasn't involved

Seems like ATF and FBI should have been in on it.

I liked the way that they announced where to find out how to make a viable bomb. The height of irresponsibility.

Seems to lay a foundation if some bombs start going off in NY as well.

14. But wait- did the bomb they used look like that rudimentary bomb in the picture, or was it bigger?
Looks like a 1 1/2" or 2" galvanized elbow with a plug in each end. What the hell did they fill it with to blow up a car?
