Fox News Megyn Kelly’s pepper spray comments spark backlash
Source: The Upshot News Blog

Following the protests at UC Davis, during which Occupy protesters were sprayed with pepper spray by a campus police officer, Fox News commentator Megyn Kelly went on the Bill O'Reilly show.

Kelly appeared to downplay the physical effects of pepper spray. Kelly said pepper spray is "like a derivative of real pepper. It's a food product essentially."

Maybe so, but her comments have sparked a spicy backlash. A petition is circulating on the Internet that suggests Kelly should put her eyeballs where her mouth is by getting sprayed with the substance on live television. Currently, more than 16,000 people have signed the pledge. Kelly herself notes in the interview that the spray is "obviously invasive and obtrusive and several went to the hospital."

Over the past 24 hours, Web searches for "megyn kelly" and "megyn kelly pepper spray" soared more than 1,000%.

2. I was watching a show on MSNBC early this afternoon,
and an expert brought out a graph indicating the "heat" of all peppers, and pepper spray is 1,000,000 times "hotter" and more caustic than the hottest pepper. So it's like comparing a bunkerbuster bomb to a fire cracker.

Really hot peppers will make your hands sore for days if you don't wear gloves, and I shudder to think what would happen if you went to the bathroom with those oils on your hands.

27. I make pepper sauce about three times a year
I have to wear gloves because the pepper burns big time. Additionally when you lift that blender cover, it burns your eyes, nose etc. big time.
I remember not bothering with gloves once - my hands burned for three days.

it was something similar to this http://www.galenacanning.com/index.php?productID=839

maybe she should drink that... mix it with some everclear and drink the whole bottle. hey both are made from food.. bit of grain and pepper.

63. Gardeners too.
I picked some of my cayenne peppers after they had turned red. I set them on the edge of the deck to go look around the yard a little bit more before going in the house to put the cayenne peppers up.

A gnat landed in my eye and my hand instinctively went to rub my eye. I never knew I could open my eyes under a garden hose sprayer until that day. It didn't help. I did not know what to do. I thought I had blinded myself forever and the pain would never end. I freaked and ran in the house.

My mother told me to open my eyes under the faucet inside for a while. I did that, even though our tap water in the city here has about 48 times more Chlorine than the rest of the state (according to the latest water reports I received). That didn't help either.

It eventually quit hurting, but not before I went back outside, got my peppers, brought them in, and put them up. I wasn't giving up my hard earned cayenne peppers. I just remember not to rub my eyes after touching them from then on. I haven't forgotten since that day. :wow: that white hot burning sensation to the eyes, I'll never forget it.

There was nothing else you could have thought of to insult her without also insulting everyone that bleaches their hair? You do realize that there are a number of women (and maybe men, too) right here that bleach their hair - like ME?

Enough of the blonde=stupid "jokes" already. They're bigoted and usually a gender specific insult toward women who are blonde whether naturally or not.

76. Do you really think that it`s bigoted to make a snark about her having bleached hair?
That seems like quite a stretch, if you`re as insecure about your bleached hair as you seem to be, why do it? At least if you do do it, realize where it sits in the cultural zeitgeist. Nobody here was insulting you personally.

Blonde is blonde and bleached is bleached, they are not the same IMO.

78. so fucking what if they aren't the same???
No, I'm not insecure about bleaching my hair, I'm pissed off that people think that bleaching one's hair means they are stupid. I'm also pissed that people think that being blonde naturally means they are stupid. I'm also pissed off that these sort of comments made as insults are always against women whether they are a natural blonde or not and not having any idea whether or not their blonde hair is natural or bleached.

Like it or not, making comments that being blonde or bleaching one's hair = stupid particularly if you are a women is bigoted and misogynist because it is always used against women. It's the same kind of bigoted idiotic fat comments intended to insult Rush Limbaugh because he is overweight.

There are PLENTY of comments that could be made to insult Megan Kelly without also being bigoted, misogynist and also insulting all other women that bleach there hair just as there are PLENTY of comments that could be made to insult Rush Limbaugh without being bigoted and also insulting all other overweight people.

Oh yes, I WAS INDEED insulted personally by someone saying that bleaching one's hair makes them stupid because I do bleach my hair. How the fuck is that NOT personally insulting to me or to anyone else that also bleaches their hair? How is that not personally insulting to me as a women since these blonde and bleached blonde insults are ALWAYS used against women? When is the last time you heard such insults about being blonde or having bleached hair used against a man? When have you EVER heard such an insult made against a man? So, go ahead and tell me how such insults are not only bigoted but also misogynist.

25. You have to read this comment.....
"Let me tell you dwwsdsdsasomething about Megyn Kelly. We were best friends in middle school. I know right, it's soooo embarrassing. I don’t even…whatever. So then in eighth grade I started going out with my first boyfriend Kyle, who was totally into spicy food but then he moved to Indiana--and Megyn was like, weirdly jealous of him. Like if I would blow her off to hang out with Kyle, she'd be like "Why didn't you call me back?!" and I'd be like, "Uh, why are you so obsessed with me?" So then for my birthday party, which was an all-spice pool party, I was like, "Megyn, I can't invite you because I think you hate spicy food." I mean, I couldn't have a spice-hater at my party! There were going to be tacos there with jalapeño peppers! I mean right, she was a spice-hater! So then her mom called my mom and started yelling at her and it was so demented and then she dropped out of school cuz no one would talk to her and she came back in the fall for high school and her hair was all cut off and she was totally weird and now I guess she's on crack."

2.0 out of 5 stars Limited effectiveness at deterring hippies, November 22, 2011
By
AussieDood (Wyoming USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Defense Technology 56895 MK-9 Stream, 1.3% Red Band/1.3% Blue Band Pepper Spray (Misc.)
I had a hippy infestation on my front lawn. I bought several cans of MK-9 on a recommendation from a police officer friend of mine. Although the product did appear to cause some pain, the hippies only dispersed for a short time. I came home from work, AND THEY WERE BACK! Not only that, word had gotten out, and there were more of them. Deploying additional MK-9 only prompted the hippies to open a taco stand. Now, after using MK-9, I have more hippies than I started with, and they have created a huge litter problem with their taco leavings. The worst part was, after their second dousing with the MK-9, they starting SINGING! Let me tell you, as a hard working landowner, the last thing you want is the unwashed masses sitting on your lawn, eating tacos and singing "We Shall Overcome." Not recommended.

Pros: High capscaisin content
Fashionable red coloration
Adds a real zing to tacos, burritos, poultry and pork

Cons: Limit hippy deterrence
May ultimately result in an increased concentration of hippies
Hard to find a matching red billy club for the fashion conscious riot control officer

79. My personal 5-star favorite:
I'm faced with a lot of dangerous situations at the nursing home. I give an order to move from the TV room to the cafeteria for a performance of the Tremonton 2nd Ward Primary Childrens' Chorus and the codgers immediately surround me, leaning threateningly on their walkers. It's a frightening situation to be in, one that always sends me scurrying to the crafts area, seeking the illusory protection of a pair of Fiskars 94917097 No. 5 Blunt Tip Scissors.

That was until I saw Lt. John Pike use this product to defang the threat of sprawling hippies at UC Davis. I immediately purchased a dozen cans. Now, not even the possibility of missing a Matlock rerun can prompt the residents to "go to the walkers."

As for mealtime, grandma no longer menaces me by shaking her mush spoon. Rather, she quickly wolfs her gruel down like a marriage defender getting the most out of a luggage handler, leaving me plenty of time for a long Postum break.

The best thing about this product is that, unlike a cattle prod, it's easy to hide when Uncle Orville's relatives drop in for a visit. No more arguments about what actually constitutes a threat.

Sure, the orange skin stains can be a problem, but that's easily explained away as a sleeping accident in the fingerpainting room.

I recommend it wholeheartedly. Heck, I'm even going to buy stock in the company. Lord knows that after Newt is elected, this product is going to be a godsend to any company faced with potentially violent labor actions launched by our new pre-pubescent workforce.

72. LOL
:D

At the college I work at there's this huge problem with students expressing their opinions. We thought this spray would put a stop to it, but it while it caused some discomfort and medical problems it hasn't silenced them. It looks like we're going to have to go back to plan A -- making college so expensive no one can come to begin with. It's a shame too, because we spent more on this spray than we pay most of our faculty.

80. My personal one-star favorite:
I went to the demonstration because I had lost hope for the future. Then the riot police showed up to spray the rest of the protesters and me. You can imagine my excitement! We were about to be pacified and returned to normal society! That's what we wanted in the first place! But the product merely caused me blinding pain. I'm even less confident in our future and institutions now than I was when I arrived at the rally. Instead of believing that my social and financial betters don't care about me, I now believe they really don't like me and want me to be in pain. NOT the order-restoring effect the manufacturers promised. I want my money back and I never even paid for the stuff!

45. She's right
Ask any bear that's every sprayed it on a hiker before eating him.

In case anyone is wondering that was a joke.

Being pepper sprayed OTOH is not. I've been sprayed that shit hurts

62. Found a great quote on there too, in the comments:
Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.

64. Don't hold your breath for Megyn Kelly to get pepper sprayed.
If I remember right it was Sean Hannity who said that being water boarded wasn't torture and to prove it he would allow someone to water board him. Anyone remember that? Maybe someone said they would do it to him to show him it was indeed torture. Either way he never did it.

67. Maybe we can try waterboarding on her, too
I mean, water is life and is essential to survival. The waterboarders would just be giving her something essential to living.

69. She is effectively right
I have some here, mixed in vegetable oil for adding to food. Pepper spray is the same thing, just with a bit of the common food additive propylene glycol.

Just like Republicans, often *technically* correct, but has no bearing on the real world.

She'd run screaming from the room if she got one spray's worth of capsaicin in a bowl of chili since that stuff's four times as hot as a habanero pepper.

77. I think it`s really really concentrated
Similar to the way coca leaves which produce a relatively mild effect are concentrated to make cocaine.

I don`t think that you`d want to put pepper spray on your food.

82. Twice as hot as the hottest pepper in the world
One short spray would make a whole pot of chili inedible for most people.

81. I don't want Megan pepper-sprayed
I want her to pepper-spray another person.

Maybe her mom.

We need a "Megan Pepper-sprays her way through history" series.
