Obligatory "Alice's Restaurant" post.
We've got it playing on CD at the moment, but here it is on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjKF7aQthcQ

(note that the URL ends with "thc" and a "Q". That's just incidental, but it's funny.)

There are just some of us who can't resist, you know?

On Edit: I just burned a CD with four copies of it and that's what's on the CD player right now.

27. It's playing again - for about the tenth time today.
I took a nap with the bunny and my old boy cat (14 1/2) so I'm not sure exactly how many times it has been on.

3. The draft is so long gone that I doubt you could get any young person to sit through it...
just not relevant to their world.

4. It isn't Thanksgiving until you either listen or watch it.
There are two things I must do every Thanksgiving. One is to listen to the full version of "Alice's Restaurant" and the other is and the other is to watch the Rockettes in the parade. My mom and I would cry every time it was on TV. She has been gone 1 years and I still cry when I watch them. I miss her.

5. Who would have guessed that Arlo would end up as a Republican?
Strange Times, indeed.

Saw Arlo and Pete Seeger in concert years ago, Pete was pretty frail even then...an American art from that is fading from existence...makes me sad.

24. I didn't want to believe it either but here ya go
My guess is that the Republican don't quite know what to do with a Arlo republican- kind of like they don't know what to do with the Log Cabin bunch.

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie is, among other things, a hippie icon. Long before he started touring, he was on the bill at Woodstock. One of his best-known songs, “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” is an 18-minute ballad that confronted the Vietnam-era draft with dark humor.

So the reaction was mixed, to say the least, when Guthrie began acknowledging he had registered as a Republican around 2003 or ‘04.

“To have a successful democracy, you have to have at least two parties, and one of them was failing miserably,” Guthrie told The New York Times in 2009. “We had enough good Democrats. We needed a few more good Republicans. We needed a loyal opposition.”

It might be interesting to ask him about his politics NOW.

Him being a republican. Had to be a joke. The quote is totally in Arlo's deadpan style.

9. the only music i play this day
i set the cd on repeat. when the song was popular in 1968 i laughed along with the others, but knew i'd be drafted. i got married. the next month, i got the draft notice. i was supposed to report for thanksgiving but postponed until january to finish the quarter. that thanksgiving of 1968 we thought it could be our only one, if i were to go overseas and get my ass killed. i got home--from korea--just fine in 1970 and ever since, thanksgiving day is a great big thanksgiving day dinner that can't be beat, in memory of the terror my wife experienced that day. i admit, i was a bit miserable, too.

happy thursday

mvs

13. I wish you would make this an OP if you have the time and inclination. The
history of the rank and file during the Vietnam era needs to be documented for posterity.

Glad you made it home safe and sound.

14. Hah, it's special for us too.
We honeymooned for a extra-long weekend in DC in '70 after marrying on the day of the OSU-Mich. game before the holiday. It was DH's last duty station (drafted Sweetest Day, '67, but missed Nam by 4 days cause he was "short") and we traveled home on Thanksgiving Day, having a cold turkey sandwich at a rest stop. We missed the family festivities so much that we vowed to make it special ever after and never be away again on Thanksgiving Day. This will be our 41st Turkey Day together with our family that now includes 1-1/2 year old grandbaby. He's getting very interesting at 18 mos. to say the least. Guess we'll have to teach him to sing that classic, hahaha.

23. Drafted into the Army in '67...
...but didn't go to Vietnam until about 2 years later. My Thanksgiving 1969, at LZ Sally, Thua Thien Province, Vietnam:

I'm front and center, and the Company Commander is behind me. At right (with cup) is the Executive Officer. The two guys at left were the other two platoon leaders. They didn't make it. The XO and I were wounded, but survived.

Despite everything, I'm thankful I had the chance to know guys like Mark Rivest (left front - Panel 9 West, Line 9) and Russ Shields (left rear - Panel 14 West, Line 108), and many others, before they were taken from us. I'm thankful, too, that I survived, and that I have many wonderful people in my life.

I learned about the 'Alice's Restaurant Massacree' Thanksgiving tradition 7 years ago at DU, and since then it's been part of my Thanksgiving tradition, too.

Happy Thanksgiving! :toast:

It was pretty close to the song, but much more dramatic.
