7 arrested on hate crime charges in Amish hair cutting attacks
What is headline you never thought you'd read, for $200,Alex?

Authorities raided the compound of a breakaway Amish group in eastern Ohio on Wednesday morning. They arrested seven men on federal hate crime charges in hair-cutting attacks against Amish men and women.

Among those arrested were the group's leader, Sam Mullet, and three of his sons, said Mike Tobin, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Cleveland.

3. When I first heard that, I laughed too. Apparently, they got down to business in the front...
and left the party, such as it was, in the back!

4. Yep--it's a "sect" thing. One group thinks the other is too hardass, or something.
To make it worse, there's intermarriage involved--the cutter is married to the daughter of the cuttee...or something on those lines.

Talk about having a beef with your in-laws!

5. Too real!!!
It's all happening in my county, Jefferson, here in Ohio. Lots of scandal surrounding our local Amish, including child abuse allegations. Who would have thunk it?

Didn't live in the town but went to high school there! (Maybe I know you?) I couldn't believe they made the news in the first place, and then this story is soooo bizarre!!!

15. Grew up in the county but knew the town. Wintersville/JVS
There was a Mennonite girl who went to our school. Her Dad brought her to school every day wearing the standard shapeless long everywhere dress. Friends brought her real clothes to wear each day.

6. I live in the general area...
so I've been following this story pretty closely.

During the first incident a couple months ago the local paper gave an account of the attack where the clan pulled up to the house in what we call a "winkie van" driven by a Yankee and asked to wait there. The driver was unaware what was happening as a trio of the men barged into the house like gangsters, did their deed, and fled to the idling van. As they jumped in through the side door, the leader yelled "go, go, go!" to the unwitting getaway driver.

For a group who probably never saw a single gangster movie, they sure had the tactic figured out and I inwardly chuckled at the surreal clash of cultures.

For those unfamiliar with the religion, the Amish churches here have a great deal of latitude. While one sect may be so strict they don't allow a slow moving vehicle sign, the one down the road may permit modern tractors on the farm. An Amish family can shop the various sects for the one that best suits their preference. This group of narrow minded adherents don't think that should be allowed. They're using terror tactics to force the majority to their way of thinking.

16. I'm here on the shore of Mosquito Lake
in Trumbull County.

To the South is Warren and Youngstown lies beyond that. Just to the North are the small towns of Mecca, Bristolville, and Mespotamia where the initial offense occurred. My sister live West of me among a strong Amish population in Farmington Ohio.

Mecca and West Mecca:

7. Good. This sort of thing is really cruel. Like forcing observant Jews to eat pork.
Lock 'em up and throw away the key.
