Missoula County Public Schools policy bans 'e-cigarettes' - gateway drug
Missoula County Public Schools policy bans 'e-cigarettes'

An updated Missoula County Public Schools tobacco policy targets devices that are growing in popularity nationwide as smoking bans take hold everywhere: electronic vapor cigarettes.

Also known as "e-cigarettes," the battery-powered devices give users a hit of nicotine through puffs on a plastic, cigarette-shaped cartridge, which creates a cloud of water vapor they then exhale. The process is called "vaping." No smoke is exhaled and the devices are entirely free of tobacco.

The new language of the MCPS policy directly mirrors language from a policy recommendation by the state Office of Public Instruction, which bans teachers, staff and students from using "nicotine innovations" on school campuses and at official school functions.

...

Still, e-cigarettes are being targeted in jurisdictions across the country as government agencies say their health risks are unknown and they could be a "gateway drug" for minors to start smoking actual cigarettes.

1. I thought chewing tobacco was the gateway drug to cigarettes?
Can you chew and vape at the same time? :)

2. e-cigs are a device used to deliver an addictive substance, they aren't appropriate for school use.
IMHO

6. Not in my school.
I don't even allow bottled water.

But I agree, schools shouldn't allow coke.

7. They ban brought in soft drinks and water?
They tried to ban water bottles in my daughters' school. Damn near cost a teacher their job when he refused to consider that an EAP could trump those rules.

8. No disposable bottles, no vending machines, no soft drinks from the outside.
We're a green school, it's all my fault, when I got there they had vending machines and crap food and staff meetings with bottled water.

Not any more.

10. In MD bans like that used to be to protect school revenue from vending machines...
One of my daughters was allowed to carry bottled water after they banned it for EAP reasons.

11. Sorry. Not all e-cigarettes deliver an addictive substance! Please..
don't spread only partial truths about e-cigarettes.

Here see for your self:

Blu E-Cigs

blu liquid is made in the U.S. using U.S. made ingredients at a FDA-registered facility.
blu has strict quality control standards; we maintain a quality control organization that inspects product lines at all facilities daily.
blu does not burn or use tobacco. It does not contain the smoke, ash and smell associated with traditional tobacco cigarettes. They provide users with a small dose of nicotine and flavoring while allowing them to satisfy their smoking needs.

There are others who supply e-cigs that do not use tobacco in their juice. Just do some research around the internet.

I am going on a year of being tobacco free. People who make assumptions about things they do not really understand fully, then preach about it like they are an authority on the subject are doing no one any favors.

12. nicotine, no matter how small the dose, is an addictive substance.
and the article isn't limited to blucigs.

Hey, I own three different e-cigs, never worked, hypnosis did, one year smoke free as of Nov 18th.

Anyway, the typical ecig is designed to deliver small doses of nicotine with flavors etc., and nicotine is an addictive substance.

No partial truth there.

15. But it should not be taken so
As far as the ecigs are concerned, even though the researches erstwhile could not say anything about healthy, no one has said it is unhealthy. So I think it should be allowed. It cannot be a gateway drug for minors to start. It is too childish to think so.
I think this has to be debated before any stern decisions are taken.

16. So teacher and staff who try to quit using these devices are not allowed to?
Really? To all the puritans out there supporting this measure...get over your selves right quick.

I stopped smoking the day I started my V2 vaporizer. Been smoking 23 years. Started the V2...haven't had a real cig since.

To those who claim in any way shape or form that V2s and other e-cigs are as bad as cigarettes, etc. you are so full of it, you squeak.

Gateway drug my ass.
