Military Detention of American Citizens being voted on Mon or Tues
Please call your Senators and please sign the petitions below!

S. 1867 National Defense Authorization Act Bill, has a provision on worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial.

got this in my email with the links below:
The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every
future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without
charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his
concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate.
The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the
military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.
The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the
National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday.
The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.)
and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.

17. The problem-parts of the bill have already been fixed
Its been around - and controversial - since at least July, but currently most of the issues have been resolved and the one addressed by the OP has, as far as I can see, been completely fixed.

You can download the bill in PDF form here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112s1867pcs/pdf/BILLS-112s1867pcs.pdf

or google "national defense authorization act 1867" and get the current version from the library of congress.

The most relevant part is under Title X, section 1032, where it now says clearly "The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States".

Fact checking what you read online is a very good thing - more journalists should try it as well!

3. The question is whether Obama will veto it or not if the bill passes,
Not supporting it, yet still signing it would indeed constitute support.

On a lesser note, this bill also contains an expansion of the Troops to Teachers program. Sadly the president does support this, and the assault on education continues.

5. I'm very much against this bill - particularly Troops to Teachers -
I'd love to see ALL the troops coming home & put in positions of management in a new jobs program to fix our infrastructure. There is so much they could do to fix re-build bridges, roads, clean up the national parks etc... And I firmly believe the top 10% of this country should be taxed to provide those jobs (and that includes myself).

But they shouldn't be taking the jobs of teachers unless they happen to have appropriate background and additional training. The things Duncan is doing in the Education realm are nauseating. I have to say I think that guy is even worse than George W when it comes to education, and that's saying something.

11. They shouldn't be put into ANY position of authority immediately.
Including (perhaps especially) police.

On that score, former military should not be allowed to BE police in the first place until a set (and long) number of years have passed between them and their time of active duty.

I want them to re-build bridges and roads. :)

4. Will there be a veto? If not then "against" doesn't mean enough. Kill the bill.
And even if it does, Congress can't be trusted, kill the bill.

16. It's troubling to see the anger when the subject comes up.
For instance:

Know your BFEE: Like a NAZI.

The truth must make them un-blackmailable. It certainly doesn't land the traitors in jail where they belong.

10. How about an old fashioned on the Senate floor filibuster to stop it from coming to a vote?

What "liberal" Senators will be doing that?

13. The PATRIOT Act makes anyone who opposes the government into a terrorist enemy...
...this law would make it easy to round them -- "us," as in We the People us -- all up.

I wonder what George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy would say about it?

18. Advise reading the bill before getting too worked up - the problem was already addressed
as in, the bill specifically and clearly exempts US citizens from military detention.

You can read the current bill here as a PDF: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112s1867pcs/pdf/BILLS-112s1867pcs.pdf.

Under Title X, section 1032 it reads now "The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States". Previously there was a section 1031 that was also an issue, but that is done away with in the current version, and overall I think it looks like a good bill now. There is a great deal in it dealing with the drawdown of forces and cutting expenses, lots of numbers and plans, good to read to get an idea how those things are done...

22. Nowhere does the bill PROHIBIT detention of US citizens.
It merely states that doing so is not a REQUIREMENT.
