Good for the EU parliament members.

Bradley Manning treatment in custody concerns MEPs

Open letter to US authorities raises human rights fears and urges access for UN special rapporteur on torture to whistleblower

James Ball
Tuesday 29 November 2011 07.00 EST

More than 50 members of the European parliament have signed an open letter to the US government raising concerns about the treatment of Bradley Manning, the US soldier in military detention for allegedly leaking classified US documents to the whistleblowing site WikiLeaks.

<...>

The MEPs said internal investigations into Manning's treatment in custody, which included solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day, inspections by officers every five minutes from 5am onwards and removal of his clothes, had been marred by "clear conflicts of interest".

They call for US authorities to grant Juan Méndez, the UN special rapporteur on torture, access to Manning.

Mendez has made repeated requests for access to the military base where Manning is held, all of which have been refused by US authorities.

What's really amazing is how Manning has spent over 17 months in pre-trial confinement without a hearing. There were also months of nude solitary confinement where he was "checked" every 5 minutes by an officer.

That is torture.

3. Also, IMO, they are making an example of him. You go against us and our ideas and
this is what we will do to you too. It's a form of Shock and Awe for the benefit of the masses. Same thing with beating up OWS protesters. We have some really nasty trends going on in the US. You sheep, you masses, you dirty unwashed masses, you stay in your ruts and STFU.

1) Bradley Manning was moved to Leavenworth 6 months ago. He is not in solitary confinement.

2) Juan Mendez is allowed to visit Bradley Manning, but must abide by the rules that everyone else does.

"The Pentagon said Monday that the U.N. official, Juan Mendez, is welcome to meet with Manning but that brig rules require that such a meeting be monitored and permit any statements Manning makes to be used against him in court."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/joshgerstein/0411/US_struggles_to_assert_transparency_on_Wikileaks_suspects_treatment.html

3) He went 17 months without his Article 32 because of defense motions, primarily. If his lawyer thought he was being denied a speedy trial, he would file a 707. He hasn't.

"** PFC Manning’s case is currently awaiting an Article 32 hearing. Based upon several defense motions in this case, the government has place the Article 32 hearing on hold until it can determine the classification level of the case. A preliminary classification review is currently being conducted in this case to determine the highest classification level of any relevant information."

Manning has had 17-months of pre-trial confinement and has spent a significant amount of time in nude solitary confinement.

6. And if Manning's attorney had a problem with it, he would file a 707.
But we all know Bradley isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.

That's what happens when you try to stand up to the war-hungry US government. The US government seeks retribution because Manning exposed their crimes. I doubt he will even be able to get a fair trial from that kangaroo court.

Thankfully he already exposed so much. He should be awarded the Nobel peace prize.

8. Oh, please. He smacked a superior female officer in the mouth and then decided to
screw over the government for being demoted.

You want to give a Nobel Prize to a loser who slaps women?

What a hero.

9. He exposed the government's criminality and he should be applauded.
What he did was indeed heroic.

10. I'm always amazed on a Lefty Dem Site that Bradley Manning and Julian Assange..get so little support

How can this be? Anyone have a clue as to why "Human Justice" and "Whistle Blowing" agains War Criminals should not get attention around these parts anymore?

I just can't understand it.

There are DUers who support this administration no matter what they do. They remind me of the mothers and grannies who say 'right or wrong he's my kid. And I'll stand by him.'
