Longshot Republican candidate mulls third-party run

Disgruntled former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson says he is considering leaving the Republican slate and running as a third-party candidate in the 2012 presidential election.

"I feel abandoned by the Republican Party," Johnson, who has been left out of most of the Republican debates, told the Sante Fe New Mexican newspaper this week, saying he might seek the Libertarian Party's support.

"The Republican Party has left me by the wayside," said Johnson, whose polling numbers have recently been so low that they are often not even being picked up by pollsters.

"If I'd have been included in 16 of the last debates we wouldn't even be having this conversation," he said.

While the Libertarians are on the ballot in every state, Johnson acknowledged that the party, which espouse freedom of expression and action, had never received more than one percent of the nationwide vote.

Johnson, 58, holds dear libertarian values such as low taxes and limited government and wants to legalize marijuana. He is also a fitness fanatic, having competed in a number of "Ironman" triathlons and climbed Mount Everest.

it really takes libertarian Republicans like Ron Paul and Gary Johnson?

Well, at least RP does. I don't even know who the fuck Gary Johnson is.

Ron Paul has a pretty big group of die hards that show up at all kinds of events, he has by far the most loyal group of supporters of any of the Republican candidates. There are not enough of them to win the nomination, but there are more than enough of them to make a major impact on the race. Gary Johnson is nearly identical to Ron Paul on policy issues and I could see many of Paul's supporters moving to Johnson's third party ticket when Paul eventually drops out.

I'm thinking with such a set-up, Obama could win. Hell, who cares? They all take their orders from the 1% so what makes the difference?

Well, one big difference is CHOICE. Ron Paul demands no abortions EVER...I should say LEGAL AND SAFE ABORTIONS. Because women will always have abortions.

The 1% likes having the power to control and manipulate...and to make women suffer is especially fun to them. So I guess, I'm back at my original thought...who cares?

Our only chance is to Occupy.

2 candidates on the right splitting from the repub party?

I have a recovering repub mother who had heard of Huntsman, but not Johnson nor Roemer. I mentioned that I'd heard of them and realised that both Johnson and Roemer had been shut out of the repub debates and that I'd seen them both on a left leaning show, Up with Chris Hayes, blah, blah, blah...

She wondered why they were on a left leaning show and I mentioned, "Chris has rightwing democrats on his panel discussions, along with left leaning folks, and repubs, trying to have a discussion about ideas..."

I also have a Dem neighbor who hadn't heard of Johnson or Roemer. Both of them are talking 3rd party runs, and I will ask again...will either actually do it, and how will there be enough room for 2 candidates splitting the right wing votes?
