whereas when Palin said it, she paired it with a comment that once again revealed her tenuous grasp on history, etc.

That's why it's not as funny as if, e.g., Barney Frank said it. If Barney Frank said it, we would know it was something he thought of or something spontaneous. When she says things like that, we know it's being fed to her from some dark, fetid hole--and not funny.

If for some strange reason I found myself watching a repub give the SOTU address and it was well thought out and reasonable, I don't see how reducing it down to WTF would be funny. Did I agree with everything he said? No... but there were no WTF moments in his speech (at least, not to those with a shred of common sense).
