Israel prepares for possibility of masses of Africans and Bedouins seeking refuge.

By Yaniv Kubovich, Zohar Blumenkrantz and Roy Arad

In light of the unrest in Egypt, Israel has been preparing for the possibility that tens of thousands of African asylum-seekers in that country could flood across the border into Israel in fear of their lives.

Army and Border Police forces have been beefed up along the Egyptian border also out of fear that terrorists could exploit the situation to cross the border and perpetrate attacks inside Israel. In addition, military planners are concerned that masses of Sinai Bedouin might seek to flee Egypt for Israel.

"We know that if the Bedouin start fleeing the Egyptian army, it will be into Israel," said Shmuel Rifman, chairman of the Ramat Hanegev Regional Council.

1. I'm going to have to Google this Bedouin stuff, ain't I?
Because it's ever so unlikely this popped up out of the blue, but suddenly I've been hearing about Bedouin doings for a week? Why?

2. i think the bedouins are like the gypsies in europe.
i also read an article by an arab writer who blamed the bedouins for the using war to spread islam across the known world.
tribalism and religion is a volatile mix.

3. They've Been There For Millenium...
Believe it or not, not all Israelis are Jewish. There's a sizeable nomadic population in the Negev area that extends into the Sinai. Unlike the border in other areas that either have wire, walls or militarized zones around them, the Sinai border is relatively open. The big concern is the border with the Gaza. Egypt has their own wall to restrict the flow of people and goods...a breakdown in security in that area could lead to yet more bloodshed in that area.

Unrest Spreads to Sinai
By Mohammed Omer

SINAI, Feb 1, 2011 (IPS) - ....

He joins hundreds of others. They have broken through into the police station already, and are now camping there to demand a change in government. Most youth are Bedouin, originally a nomadic tribe in the desert, who’ve been fighting for their rights for years. Over the last few days they feel they’re winning.

...

There is no doubt either that Bedouin youth are fully armed. It is not clear where they got their weapons from. Nothing seems certain here, and nobody asks questions.

...

The groups mingle freely with local Bedouin youth. The deprivation across this area is greater than Cairo has ever known. And the anger seems greater too.

With the anger, Bedouin youth now present a face of triumph. "It is a revolution," one says simply. (END)

5. I read it, but it is really lean on details.
They used to be nomads? And then what happened?
