1. Thankfully, we have Rise Against and Rage Against the Machine.
Not that they replace The Clash. I don't think that can be done. Ever.

3. Nah. They were the burn out type, not fade away-ers.
I don't think they had the jingle gene. I could be wrong.

I think that Clampdown is one of my favorite songs every and I may never forgive my brother from dragging me out of the US Festival '83 while they were playing it! Admittedly we had been there for more than 12 hours, enjoyed/sat through at least 7 other bands and he wasn't a fan but still! Of course, given that I was dancing my ass off right in front of a 2 story high stack of speakers, he may have saved my hearing :) (I will also never forget the verbal abuse we endured from the metal fans waiting in line for the next day's concerts as we were leaving.)

One of the saddest things - I was hanging out at a club with this guy I knew who was right wing. I pointed out that the Clash, whom he LOVED, was a socialist band - listen their lyrics - and he basically said he knew that but just ignored the words and enjoyed the music.

Edit to add:

Big Audio Dynamite often did a nice job, too.

5. I had the privilege of seeing them a few times.
They were astonishing live, particularly the first time I saw them at Bonds Casino in NYC, 1981 I think. Wow.

The Clash really did it up!

14. My embarressing Clash confession...
It's not like I ignored the words, but when I first heard them it was the music that got me first and later on it was an added bonus that the songs were about stuff that meant something. The Clash would be the Best Band Ever if The Smiths had never existed...

7. Timeless. The Only Band that Mattered.
When the same schemes, injustices, and breakdowns continue to plague society, damn straight their music fits today. I may wear my punk on the inside these days, but I'm just as righteously angry as I was back then, and The Clash remains in heavy rotation here.

Joe Strummer's later work with The Mescaleros (including the posthumously released album 'Streetcore') is highly recommended--Joe Strummer was true to his message to the end.

Great way of putting it. That damn mohawk was a bitch to put up every day.

The hairdo may have changed but the attitude remains.

9. When they kick out your front door how you gonna come...
My favorite band. I hear and see the influence they had on U2 in some of these clips.

16. No - they said what they had to say
"If you've been trying for years . . . we've already heard your song." - Death or Glory

"Remember to kick it over, no one will guide you, Armigideon time. It's not Christmas time, anymore, it's Armagideon time." - Justice Tonight/Kick it Over
