BBC - biggest crowd yet in Tahrir Square - live coverage
Edited on Tue Feb-01-11 05:21 AM by malaise
People from all walks of life. They're speaking with a female doctor who is heading there - this will be the first time she joins protesters ever. I'm lovin' this.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698

They're hanging effigies live on TV.

1. heard that people are being searched and asked for ID

to make sure the protest is peaceful. They are being searched by organized citizens
not by the government. I think they don't want provocateurs agents.

Unbelievable discipline in the middle of uncertainty. I am impressed.
It is lovely to see the women and children - even babies in the middle of the gathering crowd.

4. They can bring the babies because the army promised they won't shoot.
Doing it that long before the rally encouraged people to show up who would never otherwise risk their skins or those of loved ones.

If nothing goes wrong, today should be a hell of a party.

Unlike when we protested Bush and his War.

I've got live feeds in the corner of my computer screen.
I hope the whole top tier of the government steps down today.

14. What if they don't?
The country is coming to a halt. Some of the jobs that can't be done because of these events are going to be gone forever. ATMs are out of money as food prices skyrocket.

Mubarak doesn't have to shoot. He has to have the patience to wait. The crowd, however, has to maintain enthusiasm day after day after day. With no particular threat to rally them. No Neda.

The problem is, even if Mubarak hangs on, foreign money is still going to feel uneasy.

I'm not sure it matters anymore if Mubarak goes or stays. The damage is done.

The military steps in against him. Yes, Mubarak could wait it out but only
if he has the military behind him. We shall see....

Egyptian market rallied yesterday (after falling 20+ since begining of year) and is stable today.

I think many capitalist believe Egypt is ready for a massive economic expansion.

47. Egypt has some very good demographics.
It has a younger and more educated population than China yet has higher rate of poverty. From a shipping standpoint it is closer to many destination ports than the far east.

It simply needs political stability and infrastructure. Democratic reforms can lead to stability and oil money if not siphoned off my crony government can be put to infrastructure spending.

TV - Sports. SPORTS? Ready to hit the online sites now. Then a brief reference on MSNBC now moving on to more important things, and CNN, while in Egypt, is broadcasting stories about tourists leaving, etc -- no live coverage. Fucking frustrating. I got out of bed for this???

The New York Times has more details on former US ambassador to Egypt Frank Wisner's mission, amid speculation he may gently prod Mr Mubarak to step down when the two meet in Cairo later on Tuesday.

1043: The BBC's Lyse Doucet reports: "There is palpable joy and celebration in Tahrir Square. Meet an entire family, three generations, a gaggle of young and old women in colourful headscarves and men in suits. They say the army's announcement that they wouldn't fire on their people made them feel it was safe for all of them to come and make it a family outing. Why were they here? I asked. They said in unison: 'Mubarak must go'."

27. I don't know how they did it because they were scrambling for plain old
cameras a few hours ago but they swore they wouldn't let Mubarak's people stop them.

I think the main concern was that they were the only ones showing how the revolution really went down and how people had to fight tooth and nail.

I think Governments around the world wanted to rewrite the revolution as something that happened very peacefully, with not fighting, so that their citizens don't get the right ideas.

:hi:

34. Yes but since I only had a smart ass comment
after reading his glowing praise of Mubarak a few years ago, I decided to shut up and also to not let anything ruin my celebratory mood. 30 years too late, especially since Mubarak is out already, and $68 Billion short in my opinion. And doesn't speak very well of someone who's on the intelligence committee. His statement yesterday kept talking about Mubarak and peace, Mubarak and peace. I wanted to scream when I read it because the words Mubarak and peace don't go together.

I don't trust our media at all. I don't think their corporate for-profit funding will ever allow them to be more objective. That's something we really need to fix.

Back to celebrating again!

And Jordan's cabinet resigned already. How good is this thing going to get?

:woohoo:

30. Check this out
1220: The BBC's Lyse Doucet reports from Tahrir Square in ACiro: "Run into a group of bankers and CEOs standing on the edge of the square in casual attire, looking a bit awkward. Don t want to give their names. Joke that they are not that brave yet. But they want to see change."
1211 The BBC's Wyre Davies is at what he calls a massive demonstration in the northern port city of Alexandria. He says there are thousands of Muslims, Christians and people who support various different factions at the rally, but that they all have one common demand - that Hosni Mubarak step down. There have been minor skirmishes with pro-Mubarak groups, who have tried to confiscate journalists' recording equipment, but the president's supporters are vastly outnumbered by opposition protesters.

1343: David Anderson, professor of African Politics at Oxford University, says Mr Mubarak will almost certainly step down:"I think we're looking at days, perhaps weeks, but not too long, because I think that the signal from the army last night was clear enough - that people could protest if they wanted to and they were more or less inviting a demonstration of dissent. And I think in that situation, Mubarak can't really survive."
