and seemed just a little (understatement) taken aback when the museum's Minister of Antiquities said that although looters did enter the museum and were searching for gold, all of the damaged items can be restored and several missing pieces had been returned.

Thank you Zahi Hawass for reporting the truth to CNN news. I don't think what you said was part of the script.

1. Shouldn't they look in British Museums for stolen Egyptian Antiquities?

4. I hear ya.
Just disappointed with the negatives our media keeps trying to throw into this protest.

The big story is the protesters tried to protect the museum and they did, the looters slithered in during the night. Protesters had nothing to do with the destruction.

Seems the media is still a little shell shocked but haven't stopped their attempt to toss crap in the hopes that something sticks.

It's disgusting.

10. I would laugh but you are dead on
Let us not forget they've been looted from an empire long since gone, but probably not forgotten.

5. I believe so too.
I also believe it was done here - the RNC protest comes to mind.

7. Students and librarians have been keeping watch over libraries
And keeping them safe - obviously the majority of people are not out of loot or cause harm - but people in the nation are coming together to provide support and services.

Doctors have set up a makeshift care facility in case anyone needs medical attention (for whatever reason, not simply b/c of violence.)

People formed militias to guard their streets when the police went missing, too.

Potential problems and concern from people in the area, would seem to stem from the nonpolitical prisoners who were released - people who want to engage in criminal acts don't need a revolution to do so, however.

15. It was an inside job - two of the looters had police IDs
and they entered from the roof. It is the tallest building in the area.

16. Last year, Zahi Hawass was prevented from visiting the US
to lecture on Egyptology. The US government denied him entry. I never heard their reasoning.

17. Our media knows what will alarm people
Whether it's "looting" of antiquities or dumping premature babies out of incubators, if the belli needs a casus, the popular media know how to push people's buttons. Unfortunately, this time, the truth leaked out before the drums could really get beating. I wouldn't say the warmongers have lost their touch, but they will need to adapt to the ability of truth to catch up to the lies. I'm confident, though, that they will refine their techniques. Right now, their mean little hearts aren't into starting another war quite yet. But that situation won't obtain forever. Certainly John Bolton is doing his level best to prod the administration into recklessness, but he's just one man. His Silver Mustache of Doom can only do so much.
