Jobs in Wisconsin

What happened to Walker's agenda?

By Phil Neuenfeldt

Jan. 31, 2011

As Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday delivers his first "state of the state" address, working men and women across Wisconsin are wondering what happened to the jobs agenda that played such a prominent role in November's election.

As a candidate, Walker pledged that addressing unemployment - currently 7.5% statewide but higher in urban and some rural areas - would be his administration's top priority and the focus of a special session of the Legislature. It was part of his promise to create 250,000 jobs by 2014.

So far, it's hard to pinpoint any action by the governor that creates a single job or does anything to boost the state from its economic slump.

There certainly isn't a new job to be found in Senate Bill 1 and Assembly Bill 1, the so-called tort reform legislation passed during the session. The measure severely limits the legal protections of workers and consumers injured through acts of corporate negligence or malfeasance, such as the "Big Blue" crane accident that led to the deaths of three ironworkers during the construction of Miller Park.

A witness testifying on behalf of the legislation flatly refused to say if it would create any jobs, calling it a "trick question."

25. Nearly as pathetic as using the 1st response simply to point out UnRecs.
So, the merits or importance of this thread were not worthy of any response with the first post other than to point out UnRecs? Currently it is on the home page with 111 Recs so it seems to be doing quite nicely.

28. That assumes that UnRecs are always the work of right wingers.
Everyone always objects when their OP or one with which they agree gets UnRecs. Yes, how dare anybody do that, they must be freepers or trolls.

Is it really so difficult to comprehend that not all DUers are sheep and line up with exactly the same opinions on every subject? Why there are even good Democrats here who do not like President Obama, or maybe DK or KO. If they were to UnRec threads on those subjects with which they disagree does that make them right wingers? Obviously not. Evidently it is easier to attribute any UnRecs here to a vast right wing conspiracy, and not that people might simply not agree with the post or the subject or what it says.

OPs and new threads get Recs based upon their merits. Whining about UnRecs in the first few moments a thread is posted is stupid as this one clearly points out since it has over 100 Recs and is on the front page. Kicking a thread is more valuable than a Rec because it pushes that thread to the top of its forum every time there is a new response.

42. That would bring the voting public down to
about 10,000 across the entire US.

I think a far better answer would be for reporters to actually report facts and not the opinions of their corporate masters.

45. Nice concept
but how would said reporters get those facts out while sitting at home and no job and no production crew to distribute the message. They could record themselves and put the info out on the net but that would mean we are back to the orginal point of the voters needing to go do some research. Also, those reporters would be doing less reporting since they would be working some other job to pay the bills.

The concept is good, but we can't forget about the structure when attempting to solve problems.

As for voting, I have always believed that if someone is not willing to do the research they should make the choice not to vote in that specific election thus limiting voting activites to the races in which research was accomplished. Note before the con crowd jumps me, there is a difference between wanting them to make the choice and wanting to prevent them from voting.

47. Regulation could help
Edited on Wed Feb-02-11 12:28 PM by obxhead
A free press is a necessary and important thing, but should that freedom extend to a press that intentionally distorts and lies? A bit of regulation against a news agency being classified as news when it is simply an opinion outlet could be a step.

Yes, regulation of the news is a dangerous and slippery slope. If you think about it though, it is already happening and has been for a very long time.

Would you hire a person for a job if the applicant told you UP FRONT, that the job in question could NEVER be done well?

Hell no. But those voting GOP continue to do this over and over.

But it does feed their perpetual cycle of hate, since when things fail as planned they get to say "I KNEW government couldn't do anything right! I'm going to vote in some other rich candidate next time who claims to REALLY hate government!"

The idiotic right voted to put a bunch of nuts in office, from Governor on down -- The legislative menu so far ... 2 Birther Bills, a Bill requesting a waiver to kick 200,000+ off ACCHS (medicaid), a Bill to expand where folks can lawfully carry guns (e.g., bars, public buildings, college campuses, the workplace), a Bill to end birthrate citizenship, and a Bill to lower corporate taxes and raise citizens' property taxes.

Jobs priority one ... yeah, right.

16. The media here is just spinning this guy as the jobs man.
And people are so preoccupied with the snow storm, they won't even bother to notice that he has done nothing to create jobs here. In fact, I would argue that he has done a lot to cut jobs and keep certain others (notably the train that will now go AROUND our state) away.

Wisconsin voters were by and large, idiots in the last election and are so dumb, they won't even notice what he is doing.

I'm horrified to be living in a red state thanks to morans.

20. Well, now, just whaddaya mean passing the
tort "reform" bill isn't gonna do anything to bring in jobs? It most certainly will. Now those golden saviors of mankind and true capitalism, the corporations and businesses, will be able to do whatever they want, and, thus, kill and injure as many workers as they want, without having to worry about too much of that job-killing liability and accountability stuff. So there, you see, THAT'LL bring in a ton of slave labor-uh, ahem, I mean jobs, no, really, I meant jobs, I did!-right there. And so those bills ARE creating or will create jobs and they got no right whatsoever to trick us up with those pesky-uh, I mean tricky-questions. (Sure hope I don't need the sarcasm thingy here!)

Gah. Unfortunately, that isn't too far off from how too many of them really think.

"Wisconsin's Open For Business" is just code for "It's OK To Royally Screw Working People". Sigh. Tort reform, targeting unions, "Right to Work" (for less),.. seeking to weaken FML and BadgerCare... Maybe we can change the state motto, 'cuz "Forward!" just seems grossly inappropriate.

21. K&R
Rising Above Politics

No matter what liberals may think, it’s no crime to be dumb and unaware in this world. Otherwise most of this country would be in prison. So when I saw Big Larry mowing his lawn yesterday, probably for the last time, I just waved and pretended that everything was hunky dory. Both of us knew everybody in town saw that foreclosure block ad on the back of the paper. We have come to watch for them of late, like the obits, to see if anyone we know has been axed by fate. But sometimes you show a working man respect by giving the A-OK sign -- a sign that, bad as it may be now my brother, you’ll be back to fight again for the feudalistic delusions and promises America has ever offered to working class suckers like us, because there has never been any other choice. There have just been the good times and the bad times allowed us, according to the American financial syndicate’s needs at the time.

Sure, they may kick a lot of Republicans asses out of office next election. Big friggin deal! For my people, the same feudalist deal is on the table as ever: work hard, kill when you are told to, trust your betters, and everything will be all right. Plenty of highly politicized leftists and their meeker kin, the last hopeful Democrats, came up as hard as anyone I’ve described here. The Democratic Party definitely doesn’t want them showing up like bikers at a cocktail party and talking real populism. Because there ain’t no big money campaign contributions behind populism.

Look at it this way: Black America suffered lynchings, police dogs and fire bombings just to shit on the same toilet seats as white Americans like you and me, and ultimately waste their lives in front of computer monitors next to us on the same electronic plantation of the gulag global economy swallowing America and the rest of the world. And so, still I ask (and who am I to ask anything?): Are there any progressives or leftists willing to come out here into the hinterlands and offer the first step. True populist hope? Spell it out in “see-spot-run” language? Talk about our bad teeth and why our elderly parents are rotting in pisshole nursing homes owned by ex-car dealers and attended by imported Asian physicians who barely speak English? Or the dynamics of hopelessness that drive the meth epidemic out here?

It will take an entire lifetime of commitment amid a crumbling world. And it will continue to crumble around us even as we work. There will be not one ounce of glory or acknowledgment or public reward. But it lies there before us, the first fearful and questioning stone on the pathway to the liberation of mankind. True populist politics could give us a quarter turn in the right direction. Genuine socialism could put us on the approximate path to justice. Eco-politics cannot save us from the inevitable, but at least it can teach us to deal with our limitations as a species upon this earth. But one begins the journey at the start of the path, not the promised land at its end. Can we quit talking and start walking now?
