Child's body discovered in Delta-Mendota Canal near Santa Nella
Body was 30 miles downstream from where kidnapped child believed last seen alive


A child's body whose physical and clothing description match that of Juliani Cardenas was found in the Delta-Mendota Canal near Santa Nella today, the Merced County Sheriff's Department said.

No positive identification has been made and won't be made until DNA testing is done, according to Tom MacKenzie, Merced County Sheriff.

The body was found this morning about 30 miles downstream from where investigators believe the 4-year-old and abductor Jose Esteban Rodriguez entered the canal in the kidnapper's car Jan. 18.

The search for Juliani has focused on the canal, from which the Toyota belonging to Rodriguez was pulled out Friday. No bodies were in the car.
