S.F. Yellow Pages ban to be considered
S.F. Yellow Pages ban to be considered

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco would become the first city in the nation to ban the unsolicited distribution of the Yellow Pages under legislation to be formally introduced today by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu.

The thick volumes, dropped off at nearly every home and office in the city, are becoming increasingly obsolete in the Internet age, Chiu says, and often end up unopened in the recycling bin.

His office estimates that more than 1.5 million Yellow Pages phone books are distributed in San Francisco every year.

"If we're serious about the environment, it's time we recognize that phone books are a 20th century tool that doesn't meet the business or environmental needs of the 21st century," said Chiu.

1. It amazes me that they still deliver these unsolicited
You'd think the cost savings would cross someone's mind at some point, no? Or is the cost offset by selling ad space?

2. I agree with this 100%.
The unsolicited distribution of this unnecessary and outdated garbage is maddening.

6. I for one appreciate the Yellow Pages on my doorstep
Not everything has to be online-only. And paper can be recycled.

10. I got 3 of them delivered in a yellow plastic bag on my doorstep last week.
I went straight to the recycling bin in my garage and tossed them in.

What a waste of trees.

11. San Francisco wants to run your life

Either you live exactly the way a bunch of authoritarian nannies say or you're in trouble. It doesn't sound like a very nice place to live.

14. It is a fantastic place to live and if you want your Yellow Pages, you can opt in.
So, nobody is telling you how to live. I don't know one business or individual that keeps their Yellow Pages and every business that I work with has stopped advertising in the Yellow Pages because of their general uselessness. Their distribution is a monumental waste of resources.

21. Nothing could be further from the truth
If anything, people here live their lives in more diverse and various ways than in any other city in America.

12. In case anyone is wondering. There is an option to opt-out.
http://www.yellowpagesoptout.com/

Still I like SF idea. Make everyone opted-out and then give them the option to opt-in. Preferably by 3 methods, online, phone, and mail-in. They could mail postcard to every address, return it if you want the yellow pages (or go online or call).

16. That never works. I've tried to opt out many times. The distributers don't care...
In fact, they even drop off Yellow Pages at the gate to the alley that stores our garbage cans.

17. Well then opt-in it is then.
If they want to be irresponsible then then it should be opt-in only with fine for each book delivered to address that hasn't opted in.

18. If you live in a small town, many of their businesses don't have a web page or
are even found on the net, sometimes "old fashioned" works.

19. I know a guy in Marin who makes millions of dollars every year on the Yellow Pages
His grandfather's concept.

He lives in a house that 450 craftsmen worked on for 4 1/2 years.

I never even considered that royalties could be had from something such as the Yellow Pages.
