Egyptian authorities force mobile operators to send pro-Mubarak messages

Relations between Egyptian Government and network providers have been growing more and more strained as violent protests against President Hosni Mubarak are still persist.

Vodafone Group Plc and France Telecom claim that Egyptian authorities forced them to send out pro- Mubarak text messages to users of their mobile services in Egypt.

Vodafone said the existing situation regarding text messages was unacceptable. The World’s leading mobile phone operator by revenue, Vodafone, was last week forced by the Government to shut down its network in the country after anti-Mubarak protests erupted.

Vodafone said yesterday that they had no choice but to step up attack against the Government’s policies. The company said that the Government was forcing it to send out text messages without making clear the attribution.

One of the pro-Mubarak messages sent out last week using Vodafone’s network states, “The Armed Forces urge Egypt’s loyal men to confront the traitors and the criminals and to protect our families, our honor and our precious Egypt.”
