CNN just showed pictures of Egypt's Minister of Defense in the crowd of protesters
and he wasn't accosted, hit, punched, no violence at all. The anti-government protesters and he were just talking to each other.

So 'conservatives', who is starting the violence?

1. MoD?
The military hasn't been particularly hostile to the protestors. Maybe that relationship goes all the way up.

3. In That Case, The Behavior We've Seen from Soldiers
is the shadow of the leader. Even if they are draftees, it's difficult to believe that so many soldiers could have behaved in such a conciliatory way if their commanding officers were on board with the pro-Mubarak forces.

4. That's my thinking.
This doens't necessarily mean the top brass favor popular rule, of course. They may have their own favorite dictator-candidate waiting in the wings.

5. Things aren't always what they look like.
The Defense Minister chats with protesters while the regime incites hatred toward them, foreigners and journalists, and while the secret police abuses their prisoners in secret.
