Sarah Palin trademark application refused - for now

(Reuters) - Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's bid to trademark both her name and that of her daughter Bristol ran into trouble at the Patent and Trademark Office because the application forms were not signed, government records show.

Applications to trademark the names Sarah Palin and Bristol Palin were filed on November 5, by the Palin's longtime family attorney, Thomas Van Flein, but were quickly slapped down by a trademark examiner.

"Registration is refused because the applied-for mark, SARAH PALIN, consists of a name identifying a particular living individual whose consent to register the mark is not of record," the patent and trademark office said in an office action.

6. To quote wildbill, father of rbnyc: Holy sweet fucking Christmas on Uranus.
So if she (or her dumbass lawyer) succeeds in getting the paperwork right, whenever her name is written anywhere, will it have to look like this:

SARAH PALIN™

And will the writer of that illustrious and duly trademarked Name have to pay royalties to SARAH PALIN™?

17. I also think this means she has no intention of running for president.
What could be more unserious than trademarking yourself? While there's no shortage of ways to ridicule her, this is particularly juicy.

Of course, she's arrogant enough to think she can slide on this one just like she slides on mean-spiritedness, quitterness, animal cruelality, languicide, antigeographicity, nonmagazinishness, and piglipstickyicity.

23. You can trademark a name
For instance "Gucci" used his name to start a brand. Gucci is trademarked.

24. But the trademark was for the products, not the person.
The company founded by Mr. Gucci is called the House of Gucci and it holds the trademark. I don't think the person named Gucci ever had to be referred to as "Dilbert (or whatever his name was) Gucci™."

30. The name is trademarked with respect to a product.
Kim Kardashian has a trademarked fragrance bearing her name. But she, as a person, is not Kim Kardashian™.

If she thinks she can make a buck off her name by trademarking it, she'll try to do it.
