A good pit bull story: Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child From Attacker

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her “guardian angel.”

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as “Angela,” was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn’t have to do either to protect herself and her child — a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

<snip>

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

21. Heard this story before posted on DU couple years ago.
Incident happened in Nov 2008 .....

http://mastiffsj.blogspot.com/2008/12/animal-rescue-skeptical-of-hero-pit.html

That link kinda updated what happened to the dog after what ever took place. Not sure if they ever found a final home for him but hopefully someone took him in.

Still a very cool story to post on the big puppy no matter if it was a bit dated. Peace. ;)

2. Great story
I hope animal control either finds the owner of this good dog or at the very least find him a good home. I'd hate to think anyone would even consider putting this guy down.

5. Who's a good pibble? Yes, you're a good pibble!
I hope his people find him (and stop letting him run loose/get out), but if not, it seems his new friends will adopt him (per the article).

Belly rubs forever!

10. Dogs are very perceptive of menacing behavior.
We had one dog that was so protective of my mom that if anyone so much as raised their voice to her he'd run to intercept and stand between my mom and the offender, it was amazing.

15. I had a dog like that!
111 lbs of lap puppy, but he would defend me against anyone.

He looked scary too!

RIP my sweet Cooper! It's been six years and I'm still not over his passing. Good dog!

9. That beast reminds me of Toby.
A now-deceased pit bull who used to wander around the park north around Rosedale and Yonge. Lovely, friendly, gentle beast for whom Toby's restaurant was named.

11. I had a pit bull mix mutt that saved my next door neighbor
from an attacker that was breaking in through her bedroom window. I was asleep and my dog started growling and then she went nuts trying to crash through my window to get to the attacker. He was part way through her window, and then he ran off. The police said my pit bull mix mutt saved her. I got that dog at a pound, and had her for 3 years. Up until that night the only aspect of her personality that I ever saw was dopey happy doggy. But that night she went into full on protection mode.

16. And that unfortunately is a big part of the problem with the breed.
And a couple of other breeds. Not the protectionism per se, but that they really do seem to be made with a set of "switches" in their heads. Switches which occasionally seem to get stuck with catastrophic results.

19. I used to have a cat that would escort me when I went near
big dogs who barked like crazy at people and looked to attack if they could. I did not know at the time that he would have taken them on if necessary. He now sits on the right hand of the Goddess in heaven, and deserves every bit of it. So I can imagine beautiful dogs like the one in this story.

22. I used to have two cats that double teamed dogs a couple of times who encroached on their territory.
Edited on Fri Feb-04-11 08:30 PM by MissMarple
The dogs always ran, somewhat bloodied. One was a mid sized dog and the other a poodle. It was amazing to watch. Another cat ran into our family room and batted our Saint Bernard about the nose. Remy, the dog, just blinked. Our animal companions are truly a blessing as well as interesting. :)
