Anderson Cooper Leaves Egypt
Anderson Cooper announced on Saturday that he is leaving Egypt after a week in which he and his crew were repeatedly targeted by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak.

He tweeted, "It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to leave #Egypt. CNN continues to have many teams in place. It was a hard decision to leave."

Cooper was attacked twice by pro-Mubarak forces. On Tuesday, he was punched in the head repeatedly. On Wednesday, the window of the car he was in was smashed through by a rock. He was forced to go into hiding and report from a secret location.

Cooper is the latest high-profile American journalist to leave Cairo this week. Katie Couric and Brian Williams both returned to the U.S. earlier in the week.

5. CNN probably called him back.
They don't want their high-value talent getting whacked. Cooper is a pretty good reporter and has gone to some very dangerous places. I don't think he's just chickening out.

6. yeah, he's a real chicken shit bobble head.

15. I agree. He certainly appears to work at his job and does a decent job of
interviewing. At least he shuts up and lets his guest(s) talk.

8. When the reporter becomes the story, responsible reporters leave.
Cooper pretty much rights his own ticket at CNN, I'm guessing two things happened. He was becoming the story and CNN didn't want to lose the one decent reporter they have.

10. "Bobble head" would be the suits at CNN who
called him back I'm assuming you meant, of course. Anderson Cooper has more than proven he's a serious journalist not scared off when things get rough.

20. I don't include Anderson in that group. He pays his dues in the
front lines. Zero sum game being world famous and trying to get around in a place where you have been singled out. He's paid his dues. I don't hold it against him.

23. That's right.
You can bet your ass they'll do their best to look like heroes, while playing the humble, " I was just doing my job as a journalist" shtick.

People are so friggin gullible.

instead of walking around Tahrir Square with a camera crew.

3. I have to give Gloria Vanderbuilt's son a lot of credit - he was in Rwanda in the thick of it
as a truly "freelance journalist" - meaning he was without tangible assets in the outside world to get him out (other than being a Vanderbuilt of course).

He didn't have to go to Egypt. He went ON THE STREET something the "news" networks usually assigned to the same guy they leave on the beach in a hurricane.

Anderson is the real deal in my opinion.

7. I've liked him since he was on my kids' TV at school. Channel One I think it was called.
Then we was on "The Mole" He seems to connect with people very easily. I was very surprised when I learned he grew up as privileged as he did.

13. Easily the best reality or competition show ever
The second season was on Tuesday night and the second show was on 9/11. It got shelved, obviously, at discontinued until a summer re-air. That ended the show basically.

Anderson moved on to CNN and then got a show.

The Mole was quality TV. My wife and I loved it.

22. His mom grew up as a pawn in the most famous custody battle
in the world. His father died. His brother jumped out of a window in front of his mother and died. Yes, I see the privilege. If you mean he had money and fame, yes. Privilege? That is a matter of opinion. I like him. He's genuine.

11. I have a lot of respect for Anderson
We differ big time ideologically, but there's a very humane side to him.

14. Insurance
networks have to insure their reporters and the cost of the insurance was probably way too much.

That is part of the reason that starting in 2004 - other than political reasons - all the reports from Iraq were from the rooftop of the hotel the reporters were staying in.

9. He is too recognizable and could not get out to get the stories that need to be told
Better to leave and let people not as distinctive get the real scoop without becoming most of the story themselves. I think he realized this the other day - he seemed very depressed the first night he was broadcasting from his hidden location.

26. No doubt that crazy guy from NBC is probably going to stay

What's his name... Engel? He has a death wish.

That guy won't be happy until he's kidnapped and held hostage for a few months, and even then he'll go right back in.

There are some foreign correspondents who become danger junkies. It's an occupational hazard.
