Regarding DADT
The end of DADT is a good thing. Of course, I understand the feelings of those who believe this came about because the military needs more people to sacrifice in the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. There is no doubt some truth to that. But I'm less concerned about the motives in DC/the Pentagon, than I am impressed by those in the military who stood up and advocated for the truth, regardless of the personal consequences they faced.

The real heroes in this – and indeed, the only heroes in this – were the men and women who stated that they were dedicated to the ideals of America; that they were intent upon assisting this nation in its effort to fulfill its promise; and that they happened to be homosexual.

Those are the people that I find honorable and deserving of my respect. Everyone who supported them did the right thing, but doing the right thing should be both expected and common.

people involved in this. I was watching Rachel Maddow BOTH nights he came out on her show. The first night they had the mystery short circuit that cut his interview out and the next night when he came on again to speak out about this and in so doing, outed himself and endangered his military career.

Was very pleased my new senator, Mark Kirk, voted right this time. Glad my phone calls were not in vain.

4. Yes.
I saw him on the Rachel Maddow show, too. And I remember being very impressed by his good character.

6. Thank you for those words.
Here's a piece entitled, "Courage Under Fire" from The Advocate (Apr 15, 1997) that tells much more of the story.

There are over 11 stories of gay veterans -- beginning with Leonard Matlovich, USAF, who was discharged in 1975 (35 years ago!).

8. Agreed H2O Man - recommended
The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network have fought tirelessly for this for eighteen years.

It's gratifying that politicians finally caught up with them.

This development makes me happy. It recognizes and sets a precedent that gay people are, well, people.

And yes, doing the right thing should be both expected and common.

a very very good day!!

To those who fought relentlessly for decades, to those who stood with them, to those who voted to repeal, and to Obama who will sign it, thank you! it is a very good day.
