The new Optiplex desktops start at $650. They have the new Intel vPro processors, planned compatibility with the desktop virtualization lineup, and tool-free access to system components (meaning the back just pops off). Dell also said that since none of these systems is scheduled to ship in the next 30 to 45 days, they should go out with the updated version of Intel's Cougar Point Sandy Bridge-compatible chipset, which does not contain the recently discovered Cougar Point SATA flaw.

Dell says it interviewed 7,000-plus Gen-Y customers, IT managers, and other business segment customers to figure out what people want out of Dell's business products.

But I'm happy to finally see a Windows-based tablet. Hopefully more, and cheaper ones, will follow.

My sister rec'd one for xmas although it's still stock. I have the Nook 3g and use it daily (not rooted).

If you are a do-it-yourself type of person, you can make it into a nice, inexpensive tablet.

Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer tabs (like a camera and mic for Skype), but for the price, it is a champ.

thinking of getting a tablet, and ultimately decided that a netbook was much more functional and of course less expensive. My netbook is one of my favorite things now, and I got a great deal on it. I probably wouldn't have been nearly as happy with a tablet.

I guess that keeps it from blue screening during a demonstration!

I'm generally OK with Windows products, but I feel like I'm missing something with the Windows Mobile 6.1 on my smartphone. All the good apps run on the other OS's.

There crappy windows for smartphones isn't a good start.

And after a year and a half, it will become so much toxic waste in a landfill somewhere. Oh boy, gotta love our consumer society:eyes:

And I do recycle my computers. The trouble is, there are far too many people who continue to consume, consume, consume electronics for no real good reason. The average person gets a new cell phone every eighteen months, a new computer every three years (coincidently, that is also how often the average person gets a new car). Let's toss in iPods, iPads, and all our other personal electronic gadgetry that we consume and spit out in an endless stream of mindless consumption and pretty soon you've got a major pollution problem. Oh, wait, we've already got a huge problem with e-waste, silly me, carry on, keep on buying the latest electronic novelty, doing so instinctively, like a crow drawn to bright sparkly things. Never mind we're shitting in our collective nest.

I'm on a Dell that is at least as old as yours. However, I like hearing about new tech. I like to know it will be there when I'm ready for a new one. :hi:

And since they offer a free or cheap upgrade for renewing your contract (which you have to renew anyway), I see little reason not to buy one. Most of my old phones are sitting around in a drawer somewhere. Additionally, IMO, cell phone technology is currently improving at a rate that there will be noticeable differences in the phones 2 years from now that will provide reason to buy a new one other than just having the latest toy.

As for computers, my last laptop was a Dell and it kicked the bucket after 3.5 years. I still have my Dell Desktop from about 10 years ago and it works (I think it was made right before Dell became complete shit) but at this point I really need a laptop for what I do. My current laptop is a MacBook Pro and if it lasts for 10 years, I will use it for that long. I've used my friends' previous generation Mac laptops and they are similar enough to mine that I would certainly not have upgraded to the current generation if I had bought back when they did. Thus I assume that the next generation will be a faster and nicer looking version of mine, but certainly no reason to upgrade. The only question is how long will this thing last.

People are programmed like the good little consumers they are to respond like Pavolov's dogs to the new, bright and shiny. Even if there is little substance behind the perception.

Your story is repeated time and again, with minor variations, by people across the country. Sadly, it is a story that extends beyond cell phones and encompasses computers, iPods, and even cars. We're a throw away society and the new category of tablet computers is simply going to add to the problem.

ie look at iPad users in public. They think they're hot shit using an overpriced piece of crap in public.

I can do more on my laptop, and it was cheaper. Who's the idiot now?
