Tennessee legislator: Hooters “helped shape who we are today.”

http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/2011/02/08/tennessee-legislator-hooters-helped-shape-who-we-are-today/

-snip-

A newly elected Tennessee legislator writes in the current issue of Hooters Magazine that her experience working in the restaurants known for waitresses’ skimpy outfits led to her later success in business and politics. <...>

“I have taken quite a bit of flack from the public at large during my run for State House in Tennessee for being a Hooters Girl. But I know that without that time in my life I would not be as strong-willed and eager to become successful.” <...>

She is a Southern Baptist and a member of the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America. <...>

Hurley said working at Hooters primed her for success.

“Hooters gave me the opportunity to belong to a group of women who had also struggled, or were struggling, and I was lucky to have managers that saw each girl’s potential and coached us, protected us, and helped shape who we are today,” she said.

wonder how much they paid her to say all of that crap.

Racy photos vex state rep candidate; series removed from website
By Bob Fowler | June 21, 2010

The photos, posted on ModelMayhem.com, were removed at her request from that website Friday, Julia Hurley said today.

Hurley, 28, a Lenoir City resident, is seeking the GOP nomination for state representative in the 32nd Legislative District in the Aug. 5 primary.

In one photo, Hurley has rope coiled around her breasts while she tips a hat with one hand and holds the rope in the other. Another photo, part of a series called "Out of Frame," has Hurley, dressed in what she calls a "full black body suit similar to a leotard" and wearing knee-high black boots while stepping through a picture frame she's holding at an angle.

Those photos are part of a series that was taken about five years ago. Hurley called them "very artistic."

12. Well, other than making a far-fetched connection
Between the GOP's (so-called) moral standards and Hooters to point out some sort of hypocrisy, there's not much of a story here unless she turns into another Palin-bot, which judging by her "defending" Hooters, maybe she is one. Not that it's not possible that her managers helped her, etc., but for stuff like this, any politician worth their salt should be saying something like, "It was at a time when I was going to school and raising a daughter, and it was the best paying job I could find that would fit my schedule. Yes, we wore skimpy outfits, but the business and the individual restaurants were all run very professionally."

In college, I was friends with girls who were strippers but were getting vet science and economic degrees, and when I got my first real job, the group I was in liked to go to Hooters every now and then, and our favorite girl was, "Snoopy," because we liked how smart she was - she was older than the average waitress, already had graduated college, and was going back to earn a physical therapy degree. Plus she knew a ton of jokes and sounded like Janis Joplin one time when she sang, "Me and Bobby McGee," acapella for the restaurant. I can't begrudge women - or anyone - for seeing a good money-making opportunity that involves making men slobber over them. :)
