"Obama keeps proving the cynics wrong. Auto-emissions are the second largest source of pollutants that cause global warming, and reducing our reliance on oil is the best long-term response to the BP gulf disaster."

Report: U.S. in fast lane to put 1 million electric cars on the road by 2015
by Todd Woody

"When President Obama in his State of the Union address called for 1 million electric cars to be on the road by 2015, skeptics scoffed. But in a report released Tuesday, the Department of Energy basically said no worries. We've already arrived at our destination.

"That optimism comes from automakers' existing projections of how many electric cars they expect to produce over the next five years."

2. Electric cars were on California roads in 1996
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsJAlrYjGz8

I believe 5000 cars were built. They were leased to eager drivers. There was a waiting list.

But they were pulled from the roads and destroyed within 10 years. Why?

Big Oil and Bush/Cheney.

But hey, let's keep bailing out their failed capitalist asses...

9. Yeah, well...it's 2011 now. And two of the largest auto makers...
in the world are rolling out mass-produced, all-electric drive cars for the U.S. market.

"Big Oil and Bush/Cheney" might have won that battle, but consumer demand and technological innovation is winning the war.

10. We need both
We need EVs, and we need our infrastructure (and not just electrical) rebuilt.

It should not matter which is the chicken and which is the egg.

We can do both at once.

5. 1 million might be very conservative
Chevy Volt (E-REV)
Nissan Leaf (EV)
Ford Escape (PHEV)
Ford Focus (EV)
Fisker Nina (PHEV)

Plugin hybrids tend to get counted among the million so I've listed them. If each maker produces 67K per year from 2012 to 2014, that's a million.

If we only count the Leaf and the Focus, which are pure EVs, and each maker produces 167K per year from 2012 to 2014, that's a million pure EVs.

It will start slow but if the US doesn't promote electric cars, we'll be left in the oil grime as the rest of the world advances.

6. Count me in for 1, maybe 2.
I'm on the waiting list for Leaf, once they start selling them in the NOVA area later this year. One drawback is heating it in the winter. You can pre-heat it while plugged in but I'm trying to figure out some self contained heater for cold winter days. It's shaping up as not a good cold weather car, especially in situations where you'd need a defroster. But my current car is not a good snow car either (rear wheel drive).

We are considering a Tesla coupe as a second electric car, in a year or two. This car has a lot more battery capacity but costs $50K plus.

12. There are over 250 million registered passenger vehicles in the US
1 million vehicles sounds good to the average American until you realize the scale of the problem.
