Obama signs short-term Continuing Resolution for LIHEAP
A short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) that will fund the government through March 4, 2010 (sic) has been passed by Congress and signed into law by the President.

We are pleased to announce that the short-term CR provides additional LIHEAP funding to states and directs the Department of Health and Human Serves to make the same amount of formula funding that was provided during this same time period in FY2010 available. This additional funding brings the total amount available since October 1 to $3.9 billion in formula grants. In FY2010, Congress appropriated $5.1 billion ($4.5 billion in formula and $590 million in contingency) in total. Additionally, $200 million in contingency funding was released to states.

I know there is a lot of outrage over the rumor that Obama is proposing to cut these funds, but this CR is fact. Another thought on Obama's as-yet-to-be-official proposal, he might be asking for the cut because it is a lot less of a cut that the pukes are going to ask for. Just a thought.

NEW YORK TIMES CONFIRMS: OBAMA PROPOSES CUTTING LIHEAP BY 50% Updated at 5:30 AM

Oh, that pesky New York Times - quoting Obama's administration officials again!

THIS CUT IS WHAT OBAMA WANTS!

THIS IS WHAT HE AND HIS ADMINISTRATION ARE PROPOSING!

Who dares deny this now? Now the apologists will doubtless switch their argument to defending the proposed cut.

What will their next polemic be? Let me guess. "Well, they were all going to die sometime, and freezing overnight is better than prolonged cancer." Or, "Hey, this is a two-fer. Save money on LIHEAP and clear the roles of the most impoverished and fragile on Medicaid." Just a bunch of heartless Malthusians excited about reducing the surplus population!

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/10/us/politics/10congres...

"But Republicans have succeeded in shifting the focus to budget cutting so sufficiently that the White House will propose an array of cuts in the budget for next year that Mr. Obama sends to Capitol Hill on Monday.

Administration officials confirmed on Wednesday that the budget would propose to cut in half, to nearly $2.6 billion in fiscal year 2012, a federal program that subsidizes energy costs for low-income households.

The big reduction for the popular Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program immediately drew protests from lawmakers and antipoverty groups, as have several other cuts the administration has previewed for community service and environmental programs."

8. I think sarcasm is still allowed on DU
And those rationales justifying Obama are no better, when you consider the end result of Obama's lethal slashing of the program, than the traditional apologists', "Well, Obama is doing a great job because the GOP wanted to take away ALL the funding, but Grand Chess Master Obama's cleverly beat them to the punch by voluntarily gutting 1/2 the program."

6. He needs to veto any proposed bill that cuts LIHEAP. Period.
Especially if the Republicans bill would cut LIHEAP more than the 50% cut that Obama is proposing. Politically, he can come out ahead if he does this AND it's the right thing to do. You know, since he's a Democrat and all.

MAKE them pass a bill that does not include this reactionary, conservative attack on the the poor.

9. Not likely from a president whose inspiration is Reagan
and not FDR.
