Al-Wadi al-Gadeed security chief dismissed, referred for investigation
Agencies
Thu, 10/02/2011 - 12:43

Al-Wadi al-Gadeed Governor Gamal Imbabi said Minister of Interior Mahmoud Wagdi decided to dismiss Abdullah Saqr, chief of the governorate security department, and refer him for investigation.

...

Police captain Ahmed al-Sokkari will face investigation after police confrontations with protesters left two civilians dead and dozens injured, according to Imbabi.

Police used tear gas and live ammunition to confront protesters who had set the National Democratic Party headquarters, police station and a court building on fire in the al-Wadi al-Gadeed governorate.

China says Egypt should decide future on its own
Thu Feb 10, 2011 11:02am

BEIJING Feb 10 (Reuters) - China said on Thursday foreign powers should stay out of Egypt's affairs, in an oblique swipe at the United States and some European countries that have put pressure on embattled President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

...

The Middle East is also a major source of oil for the fast-growing Asian economy.

...

Spokesman Ma also called for stability in the region, saying China recognised that the country's crisis had broader security implications.

...

China's tightly controlled state-run media has reported on the unrest in Egypt but has scrubbed public commentary on its political origins from micro-blogs, wary that calls for reform in the Arab world's most populous nation could ripple into China. Saudi king so frightened of #Egypt revolution he will pay billions to try to suppress it

King warned Obama Saudi could fund Egypt if US backs out
Reuters
Thu, 10/02/2011 - 12:27

London--Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah told US President Barack Obama that his country would prop up Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak if the United States withdrew its aid programme, The Times said on Thursday.

Abdullah told Obama not to humiliate Mubarak, who is under pressure from protesters to quit immediately, in a telephone call on 29 January, the newspaper said, citing a senior source in Riyadh.

...

The United States has long nurtured its alliance with key ally Egypt, giving billions of dollars in aid as it seeks to influence affairs in a region whose autocratic rulers are struggling to contain social discontent.

The United States has stopped short of endorsing calls for Mubarak, 82, to leave office immediately. He said last week he would step down in September when an election is due.

this morning it could be seen how hundreds of tanks were being deployed through Nasr City, a suburb to the east of Cairo, prepared to enter the city center if needed to repress the protest tomorrow (Friday).

--------------------

Story also says that train tickets to Cairo are impossible to get, apparently to keep Egyptinas from other cities from joining the protest on Friday.

I have only seen this in El Pais so expect other media will pick up and confirm these developments.

Happy to rec and K & R.

The Revolution Flickrized
posted on THURSDAY, 10 FEBRUARY 2011

I haven’t been to Cairo recently, but my brother Nadim was living there until last week when his fellowship program instructed him to leave. I have been devouring coverage of unfolding events with almost unwavering attention, watching in awe and concern as my brother and friends shared stories and posted photos online. I know my body is in China, but I stare at the screen so much I feel my mind and heart are there in Cairo.

To close my chronicles of our recent travels in the Middle East, I’d like to share the perspective of what has been taking place in Cairo through the photographs and words posted by our friend Hossam. For years, many have frequented his blog 3arabawy for news, photographs and commentary on the gradual progress towards change that has been building momentum in actions and protests throughout Egypt. In a memorable post from two years ago he wrote prophetically: THE REVOLUTION WILL BE FLICKRIZED

Hossam has been a leading activist in the effort to use images, new media and the internet to make the mass uprising that could finally overthrow Mubarak possible.

The day has finally arrived.
My eyes glued to his blog and Flickr page, Twitter, Al Jazeera English and Democracy Now, I often hear stories or see images that move me to tears in a heartbeat. It’s both a constant celebration and constant state of fear for what might come next.

Injured

I feel inspired and overwhelmed that it has come to this for the Egyptians, and that children, women and men of all professions, all religions and all cities are out on the streets to make their voices heard. For two weeks each of them has literally been putting their life on the line to stand up for what they believe in: every person’s right to freedom and dignity irrespective of class, religion, gender or race.

....

2:07pm The security chief for the Egyptian city of Wadi al-Jadid (New Valley) was sacked and the police captain who ordered police to shoot at protesters was arrested and will be tried. At least five people were killed and dozens wounded in three days of clashes between police and citizens.

2:00pm The criminal court in Egypt has endorsed the decision of banning three former ministers from leaving the country and the government has also frozen their assets.

1:54pm The Egyptian prime minister forms a committee that will gather evidence on "the illegitimate practices" that resulted from the events of recent weeks. The committee will receive reports from citizens and civil society organizations and then present a report to the public prosecutor.

1:39pm About 1,000 physicians, all dressed in white coats, have arrived at Tahrir Sqaure to huge applause and acknowledgement.

1:12pm About 3,000 lawyers have marched from the lawyers syndicate in downtown Cairo to Abedeen Palace, a historic palace, and one of the official residences of the president. They are heading to Tahrir Square to join protestors there.

1:04pm There are lots of jokes and funny banners circulating, both in Tahrir Square and on the internet - this picture of scuba divers is a good example - the signs says: "Leave before we run out of air".

List of heads of state and government by net worth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of heads of state and government by their net worth, and is listed in U.S. dollars for simple comparison purposes. Former heads of state and government may also be found, though listed separately from current ones.

There are issues with converting the net worth of various individuals from around the world to a single currency, notably ignoring the buying power and standard of living in a person's native country that could inflate or deflate a person's net worth relative to others upon this list. For example, when comparing the same standard of living and property, it would cost more to live in London or New York City than it would to live in a rural town, and such living would cost still less in a developing or poorer nation. Or more plainly spoken, the same dollar buys more in a poor country than in a prosperous one, and this list does not account for that exchange in purchasing power. So converting all net worth to American currency is done for ease of comparison only, and may not adequately represent the buying power of an individual within his native country.

Name Title Net Worth Country
Hosni Mubarak President of Egypt $70 billion (June 2009)<1> Egypt
Bhumibol Adulyadej King of Thailand $30 billion (June 2009)<1> Thailand

The Road to Tahrir Square

Cairo Bureau Chief David D. Kirkpatrick and Mona El-Naggar took a ride to Tahrir Square with Islam Lotfy, a young activist who helped spark the uprising in Egypt, to learn how it all started.

Switzerland Is Examining Whether Mubarak Has Assets in Country
By Leigh Baldwin - Feb 8, 2011 6:56 AM GMT-0600

The Swiss government is examining whether Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has assets in the country after the accounts of former Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali were frozen last month.

“The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs is looking into” whether Mubarak or his family have any assets in the nation’s banks, and “the government will be informed,” Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf told SF in a television interview broadcast late yesterday, adding “there are no entirely clear signs” of whether Mubarak or his entourage do have assets in Switzerland.

Mubarak has said he intends to stay in his position until September even as daily rallies in Cairo call for him to step down. Protests spread to Egypt after Tunisia’s former President Ben Ali left the country for Saudi Arabia. The Swiss government has said it blocked “tens of millions” of Ben Ali’s assets.

Switzerland’s reputation as an international banking center depends on the ability to check whether funds deposited in its banks had been acquired legally, Widmer-Schlumpf said. The government would act “appropriately,” after the Mubarak investigation, she said, without being more specific or saying that any potential assets would be frozen.

Dictators' sons from #Egypt to #Libya are doomed

Qaddafi's son has been linked to arms smuggling. Saddam's kids were rapists and torturers. Despot's children often hasten their fathers' downfall. Just ask Mubarak.

Hosni Mubarak is falling from power in Egypt partly because he refused to heed one of history’s hidden lessons: Dictators shouldn’t have sons.

Most do. That often hastens their downfall or that of their nations.
Egyptians might have been willing to accept their lot for a while longer if the ailing Mubarak had not made it clear he intended his son, Gamal, to succeed him in power. Of all his arrogant acts, none insulted his people more than his insistence that of the 80 million Egyptians, Gamal Mubarak was best qualified to lead the country. The plan was for him to rise to power not by popular vote, but only because his father wished it that way.

Barely a week after protests exploded in Egypt, President Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen publicly promised that he would stop maneuvering to place his son, Ahmed, in the presidency after he departs. At the same time, King Abdullah of Jordan, who succeeded his father on the throne, sacked his government in an effort to shore up his regime. His monarchy seems secure for the moment, like that of his namesake in Saudi Arabia, but the idea that sons have the right to succeed their fathers in positions of near absolute power has ever fewer supporters.

Who speaks for Egypt's youthful protesters?
The revolution appears to have no organized leadership, and that's becoming a problem

When I approached Nagla Nasser in Cairo's central square Sunday, she told me she was too old to talk to a reporter. "This is a youth revolution," said Nasser, who looks to be no older than middle-aged. "You need to talk to someone young." Exactly. But the question facing the popular revolt against the rule of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is who speaks for the young protesters in the square. Egypt's youth has been instrumental in starting this uprising. Now everyone is asking who will finish it.

Today, I asked Tarek Nowar, an activist whom I have spoken to a lot in the last two weeks, if he'd heard of a revolutionary youth council representing the interests of the people in Tahrir Square. He responded: "Which one?" For almost two weeks, the sight of hundreds of thousands of leaderless Egyptians calling for the ouster of Mubarak has been inspiring. Suddenly, it has become confusing. The revolution appears to have no organized leadership, and meanwhile the Egyptian regime is back to doing what it does best: Divide and conquer.

...

Not in talks

According to youth coalition, they are composed of five of the country's established youth groups, including the Sixth of April movement, the Muslim Brotherhood Youth, and the National Association for Change. Each of them appointed two members to a 10-member council.

"None of us are in negotiation" with the government, said Mohammad Abbas, Brotherhood Youth's representative to the council told me. "We'll only negotiate after the removal of Mubarak."
