To accomplish this, it is necessary to inculcate in the vast majority an illusion of political power that is inconsistent with actuality. A slave who is comfortable in his slavery, who believes he is free, is far less likely to rebel against his oppressor. In an empire, "Democracy" is little more than a dog and pony show.
The next revolution in human governance needs to be more than a mere "political" revolution. It needs to be a revolution in human awareness and understanding of what is possible in terms of the benefits of social organizations that are equal, diverse as well as socially and environmentally sustainable. The next revolution needs to be a structural revolution -- one that completely realigns our thinking with the actuality of social and environmental necessity. It needs to be a revolution of quality, not merely quantity. In other words, the focus must shift from valuing "how much" one has (whether things, wealth, power or what have you) to the QUALITY of a social life shared by all. A life lived in peace with one's neighbors (social and ecological environment) is qualitatively better than a life lived in conflict, for example. This is a revolutionary thought, a revolutionary awareness.
If we pay attention, we'll begin to see that it is coming. It may not look like revolutions of the past. In fact, how could it, since to be truly revolutionary it must not be merely an exchange of one oppressive group or ideology for another. It must be far more fundamental, structural, something that to our minds may at first seem "counter intuitive" or simply "far fetched" or "Impossible". The fact is, though, the revolution I'm speaking of is here. The very fact that we can have this conversation and not even know who the other is, is part of it but only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The future will not look like the past and that is what those who want to control the future by sustaining their hegemony fear the most.
