I am starting to have concerns for the Egyptian protesters
Given a story I posted a little earlier here:

Egypt army takes charge, Mubarak to address nation
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x387783

And given the CBS news @ 9:00 am (MST) on my local radio station was calling this a soft coup, whatever that means. And also given a really strange post of a statement that was made by Vice President Omar Suleiman a couple of days ago here:

So Suleiman is threatening the people of Egypt with a coup
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=378193&mesg_id=378193

And now Ed Schultz is reporting that President Mubarak is in a location near the airport surrounded by tanks.

I am starting to have concerns that this might not end well for the protesters.

Thoughts?

1. The world is watching
Which I guess could be good b/c Egypt can't be seen as too brutal.

But they also can't afford to be seen as weak. So I see them splitting the difference. Which is still very scary, I agree.

3. Yeesh.
I knew it was bad, but I didn't know the number could possibly range in the thousands. Horrifying.

6. as long as the government allows it.. they can kill communications
and round up reporters ..they have already done it..

a "wounded" dictator is like a wounded predator..you can never underestimate the power they still have left..and they will lash out until the very end. his minions stand to lose everything if he goes down, so he DOES have support..deadly support.

9. Very true. What the world is watching may be controlled by Mubarak & co.
I'm scared for the next few days.

4. I'm not that worried,
The army, the real power right now in Egypt, came out early in the game and said that they would not go after the protesters. That action pretty much neutered Mubarak and Suleiman.

I think what is going on right now is a negotiation concerning Mubarak's exit, ie where he will go and how much he will be allowed to take with him, and a negotiation about how power is going to be transitioned to an eventual democracy.

We'll see.

7. And without the army backing him,
With the police and mob thugs out of the picture, what is left for him to turn to?

Mubarak is all bluster at this point, that's it.
