Wisconsin surpassed us in cranberry production here in Kennedy country, and it just ain't right.

17. Indeed. Well, California cheese says so on the
package. Something about grateful cows. No, happy cheese. I don't remember, but it says California.

All these boycotts are getting ridiculous.

It's not fair to blame innocent people in a state for what their governor does. Or even their legislature, either.

cab drivers/prostitutes/bookies/whatevers".

By that logic, no protest is possible, since the putatively innocent ALWAYS suffer in such matters.

But the innocent are suffering now as well.

fuck that bogus logic, status-quo apologetics masquerading as social concern.

34. Protest all you want
All I'm saying is do it to the right parties. The dairy farmers of Wisconsin are no more responsible for their governor and what he does, than dairy farmers in California were for Governor Schwartzenegger.

Economic boycotts that have nothing to do with some inherent part of the product being boycotted (like the lettuce and grape boycotts of the 1960's, because of how they were harvested) are counterproductive. They just make additional victims out of a bad situation.

35. you're saying the voters aren't responsible for who they elect? especially powerful
ones like the ag lobby?

what would your suggestion for an economic boycott be?

any economic boycott will hurt someone who's not *directly* responsible.

and that is indeed the *point* of an economic boycott.

45. Not all voters are responsible for who gets elected in their states or districts
When there is no obvious connection between the "bad" behavior and the people being punished by a boycott, then it needlessly alienates those who would be most likely to effectuate change in a particular state. There's nothing I can do directly about Wisconsin's governor (other than contribute to an opponent) but the Wisconsin farmers all have a vote in that state. If the Rethugs say, "Look at what them libruls want to do to you," then they're more likely to co-opt the Wisconsin farmers to their side.

I guess I just have trouble with economic boycotts, and you seem to favor them as a weapon of first choice.

37. What's a little collateral damage?
Look at Iraq, after all!

I find your attitude to be callous and condescending. The innocent are already suffering, so what's a little more financial and emotional distress between friends and supporters? That's YOUR approach to "social concern?"

Protest IS possible. Get your ass out on the street, where thousands of other people have been and will continue to be through the week. Do a little research to find out which corporations supported Walker and boycott them! Some are already mentioned down-thread. Make some phone calls! Write letters! Look at some of the websites and facebook pages that have been set up since Friday, to inform people as to how they can actually help.

Yes, it takes a little more time to use Google and find out which corporations supported Walker and are pushing for his agenda. Yes, it will be miserable out on the streets, but you can bundle up and put on good walking shoes. It is a little more work than sending out a "valiant" email declaring that people should "bring Wisconsin to its knees," but you'll be in good company, and might even meet a few dairy farmers, cranberry growers and cheese-makers out there.

Thousands and thousands of people have mobilized since Walker's statement on Friday, in order to keep our state from being brought to its knees by a corporate-supported thug. Thanks, but no thanks to your offer to "help" with bullying of your own.

41. Is that the same attitude you take
toward the entire country? Bring it to its knees. Punish everyone because the right-wingers have taken the House, and are determined to take the Senate? What did you do for the eight years bush/cheney ran the country?

OK, well, I'm off to make some calls and see what I can do to help our legislators who are trying to stop the governor. While I'm at it, I'm going to eat some local cheeses, jellies and breads and have a Spotted Cow. I'll drink one on your behalf.

Have a nice day.

in crushing the lower and middle class.

And yes, I believe that Walker is part of a nation-wide effort by the right wing to break the backs of unions.

And with that cheery thought, I will just agree to disagree with you. Thanks for the discussion. I'm going to get my (self-employed, therefore non-Union) work done so I can spend my afternoon and evening trying to stop the dictatorial governor I did not vote for.
