Drills imminent, according to CNN
this may see return fire from N. Korea.

Tensions are at an all time high.

CNN is actually covering this as breaking news.

I have not felt this way since oh Gulf War II... I SHOULD go get some emergency rations actually, but I am NOT on a frigging Island.

For that I stocked up for a month, and for two weeks me and oonnie, the parrot, hit on those fairly often.

21. So the response is to use live-fire drills right on the border?
What's the purpose for these drills? Are they strictly NECESSARY? And if so, can't they be conducted far away from the North Koreans?

This is madness. Intentional provocation during a time of tension.

23. If the South backs down
they will get more.

I don't say I agree, but in the East this is all about saving face. A concept that is pretty much alien to the West.

As far as the citizens are concerned, the leadership has lost quite a bit of it.

Oh and for the North, this is a rite of passage for Kim Jun Un....

There is this Guns of August feel to it.. but this is really what is going on. Of course this is the cliff's notes of this and I hope we are NOT at war coming morning. And I mean you and I... Canada is part of the alliance on one side

19. Expert on right now
The N. Koreans have promised a nuclear war and not just limited to the Peninsula.

We could easily get involved due to 28K troops and all interlocking treaties...

Guns of August... it really has that feeling to me.

27. If a North Korean response injured or killed one of our soldiers, I don't see how we could avoid
responding.

And if it went nuclear? I can't even imagine what could happen. A nuclear response? Enter China and Russia?

Not to mention, if it turned into a prolonged conflict, even without Chinese and Russian involvement, can the US actually sustain such military action, given our ongoing wars? Would other major powers not see our weakened state as an opportunity?

The worst-case implications are just beyond comprehension.

However, I believe at this point, SK has to call NK's bluff.

33. For the reasons you stated regarding US
they are doing what they are doing. Uncle Sam has obligations that it cannot meet short of a nuclear response, or a very long war and a general draft.

If we go for the latter, anybody drafted, pack warm, it gets cold there.

it is a little dated.

It was written at the time when the US did that. OUr dominance IS waning.

I guess future historians will use Mahan's book as one bookend and this one as the other.

They could use the PNAC project, but that came a little late.

There is nothing new here. These exercises are held every year (including 1977-78, when I was stationed in Korea). And every year the North Koreans have a hissy and rattle their sabers and nothing about it.

I expect them to do nothing again. Why break a perfect record?

It wasn't even that nitwit Kim Jong Il then. His nitwit old man, Kim Il Sung, was still alive.
