Police chief: hospital tried to aid dying man

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland's police chief has stepped back from criticism officers leveled at a Portland hospital where a 61-year-old man was dying in a parking lot last week and officers were told to call 911.

Chief Mike Reese appeared briefly at a press conference Tuesday with Portland Adventist Hospital officials who said medical workers did everything they could or should have done — except communicate well with the officers.

Reese says it is clear hospital workers were "preparing a response" to help Birgilio Marin-Fuentes, initially thought to have been a car crash victim. Instead, he died of a heart attack after driving himself to the hospital.

Hospital officials replayed surveillance camera video they said showed an emergency room charge nurse dispatching a paramedic within a minute of being notified the man was in trouble.

1. I think the damage is already done ....

That is a bell already rung ...

On another note: Aren't the Adventists the one's who keep predicting the end of the world, and then have to reset the date every time that date passes uneventfully ?

AFTER the followers had already sold their possessions, of course ....

I would have kept a knapsack somewhere, just in case ...

2. I don't know much about the Seventh Day Adventist
But you're right, they did have a bunch of "end of the world" declarations.

The Adventist movement has its roots in the 19th-century "Millerite movement," which centered on the belief that Jesus would return on October 22, 1844. William Miller (1782-1849) was a farmer who settled in upstate New York after the war of 1812. He was originally a Deist, but after much private Bible study, Miller converted to Christianity and became a Baptist. He was convinced that the Bible contained coded information about the end of the world and the Second Coming of Jesus. In 1836, he published the book Evidences from Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ about the Year 1843.

The prediction of the year 1843 was based in large part on Daniel 8:14: "And he said onto me, unto 2,300 days, then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." Miller believed the "2,300 days" referred to 2,300 years and that the countdown began in 457 BC. He concluded that the "cleansing of the sanctuary" (interpreted as the Second Coming) would occur sometime between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844.

When these dates passed, Samuel Snow, a follower of Miller, interpreted the "tarrying time" referred to in Habakkuk 2:3 as equal to 7 months and 10 days, thus delaying the end time to October 22, 1844. When this date also passed uneventfully, many followers left the movement in what is now termed "The Great Disappointment." Miller himself gradually withdrew from the leadership of the group and died in 1849.

On the subject of this thread, I'm saddened that the original thread got so much attention, but the one with a link to the actual events gets very little.

5. Adventists are an apocalyptic cult.
I come from a family where most of the relatives are Seventh Day Adventists. Their religious ideas revolve around looking forward to the end of the world, and not much else. But they make pretty good vegetarian food, though.

6. And ? .... They apparently run hospitals ....
I often wondered about the nexus between belief systems that embody 'faith healing' through the 'Salvation of Jesus Christ', and healing through medical science which, using careful investigation and scientific methodology to reach conclusions independent of 'salvation' ...

11. they are opposed to mental health medication
My uncle is a Seventh Day Adventist doctor who works as a hospital's in residence psychiatrist. He won't prescribe medication for mental health diseases, and tells them that their mental health problems are caused by not turning their hearts to Jesus.

7. Read "Black Boy" to learn more about Adventists.
Richard Wright was raised by a hateful grandmother who was an Adventist. Really a horrible person who apparently never said on positive thing to the author growing up. Didn't want him to read books either.

I knew a lady born in 1901 in Indian Territory who grew up in a sod house as one of 11 kids. She got married at 14 to get out of the house. She said they were not allowed to go to movies or to read "the funny papers" as she called them.

Sounds very anti-intellectual. I believe Henry Fonda was Swedish and was raised Adventist. The lady I knew was the child of Swedish and Danish immigrants.

14. Oh no, it's way too much more fun to bash any disfavored group
especially when there might be religion involved somehow.
