Coca-Cola's Top Secret Recipe Revealed
"This American Life" -- the popular public radio program -- says it's uncovered Coca Cola's secret recipe.

If true, it would appear to blow the lid off one of the most closely guarded secrets in U.S. corporate history. After all, legend has it that the recipe is tucked away in a bank vault, and that no more than two executives ever know the full recipe at any given time, as a safeguard to keep rivals from stealing it. According to the radio program, some of the ingredients that give Coca-Cola its unique taste include coriander and cinnamon. Click below to read the full recipe.

But here's where this story gets weirder, and why we'll need to keep tabs on it: "This American Life" is supposedly quoting the recipe from a 1979 article that ran inside the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which is the hometown paper to the Atlanta-based Coca Cola Co. We called and e-mailed Coca Cola for official word. We will keep you posted on what they say. And you can be sure there will be more to say: The flood of interest has apparently overloaded the radio program's website.

Best headline we've seen so far comes courtesy of those wags over at the Daily Mail: "Is this the real thing?"

4. I had a client once that worked at a Coca-Cola bottling plant
she told me that they had to wear protective gear because the stuff was corrosive ...

of course she also went to prison for cashing her dead sister' social security checks.

went to prison.

Oh, you mean the "corrosive" thing. Yeah, my insides would have pretty much dissolved by now.

11. In the army we cleaned battery terminals with coke.
Not just soda in particular but Coca Cola. It eats right through the battery corrosion. Works much better than any industrial solvent.

16. You have to remember, your stomach contents are very corrosive on its own...
If one is willing to swallow a sponge on a string they probably could use that sponge to clean engine parts, too...
but, probably easier just to use coke.

in the washing cycle of Dad's greasy coverall's .....hummmm

Also heard about using it on car battery terminals as mentioned above.

Also heard about using it on whitewalls of tires, when they had whitewalls (showing my age)

5. Can't be "the real thing" because Coke uses High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
instead of sugar.

Once you start compromising and substituting ingredients, it's no longer the same formula.

20. The real thing...
You can buy cases of Mexican Coke by the bottle at Costco. It's made with real sugar there like most foreign countries. In fact, I think the US is the only country where Coke is sold with that HFCS shit. The Mexican Coke made with real sugar tastes a hundred times better.

7. Myth: secrecy makes it more valuable
Coke lost to Pepsi in an internal Coca Cola taste test. Months later they came out with "New Coke" (eg. Pepsi in a coke can).

Availability and boatloads of advertising is what keeps Coke on top.

8. coke taste better in a can
why a can I have no idea but I was addicted to coke in a can once. I've read that pepsi has changed their recipe bunches of times over the years looking for just that right taste and as the times change.

Oh, I'm hooked on mountain dew in a bottle now :-) but I try to limit myself to one 12 oz bottle a day.

15. +1
You're absolutely right, it does taste better in the can than in bottles, and way better than fountain drinks. I've always described the taste as being "tinnier." I have to wonder now if it actually is dissolving the inside of the aluminum can.

19. I prefer fountain drinks, but only at major drink retailers who do it right...
Small, independent convenience stores don't tend to mix their fountains right, but Sonic and other major fast food retailers have consistent drink quality. To me, NOTHING compares to a good fountain drink! Oh, but I drink diet Coke, not regular, and I have heard that one reason diet drinks taste differently between fountain and bottle is that different sweeteners are used.

9. New Coke was a diversion so we would not notice the HFCS switch
The only purpose of New Coke was to divert us while the old supplies of sugar coke ran out. Then they brought back this shit that almost tastes the same but not really.

14. A while back, a coke exec got in hot water for attempting to sell the recipe.
A far as I'm concerned it's sugar, caffine and a whole bunch of shit that'll make you fat.

17. Reminds me of the Mitch Hedberg joke about Sprite:
"They say Sprite is made out of lemons and limes, but I tried making it at home -- there's more to it than that."

18. The "secret" mythos is one of Coke's marketing cards...
Even if that notebook picture is the real formula, we'll never know and the "secret" mythos will carry on.
Even taste tests would be difficult as there are so many factor that affect perceived taste.
For instance, I like BK's coke better than McD. Why? I don't know. could even be straw size, ice shape, or carbonation.

22. Mexican Coke is much better than ours.
Nothing like REAL cane sugar. The "recipe" varies by country, so the "recipe" is just marketing hype.
