Green Bay Packers football players support Wisconsin public workers

Packers Support Wisconsin Public Employees
by Tula Connell
February 15, 2011

Members of the reigning Super Bowl champs have come out in strong support of the state’s public employees and in opposition to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s attacks on the state’s public servants, which include threats to call out the National Guard if they strike or protest his extreme measures.

In a statement issued moments ago, current and former members of the Green Bay Packers say it’s:

.... teamwork on and off the field that makes the Packers and Wisconsin great.

It is the same dedication of our public workers every day that makes Wisconsin run. They are the teachers, nurses and child care workers who take care of us and our families. But now in an unprecedented political attack, Gov. Walker is trying to take away their right to have a voice and bargain at work.

When workers join together it serves as a check on corporate power and helps ALL workers by raising community standards. Wisconsin’s long standing tradition of allowing public-sector workers to have a voice on the job has worked for the state since the 1930s. It has created greater consistency in the relationship between labor and management and a shared approach to public work.

These public workers are Wisconsin’s champions every single day and we urge the governor and the state legislature to not take away their rights.

Signers of the statement include: Curtis Fuller, Charles Jordan, Bob Long, Steve Okoniewski, Brady Popping, Jason Spitz and Chris Jackie.

Thousands Protest Anti-Public Worker Bill in Wisconsin
February 16, 2011

And protests are continuing in Wisconsin over a bill that would eliminate almost all collective bargaining rights for public workers and slash their pay and benefits. On Tuesday, an estimated 10,000 people gathered at the Capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin. Protests were also held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and high schools around the state. In a statement, Wisconsin’s professional football team, the community-owned Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, backed the workers’ right to collective bargaining, saying, "Wisconsin’s long standing tradition of allowing public sector workers to have a voice on the job has worked for the state since the 1930s… These public workers are Wisconsin’s champions every single day and we urge the Governor and the State Legislature to not take away their rights."

So what's your point?

15. I don't put anyone on ignore simply because we might have heated debates or disagreements.

There is nothing wrong with that.

The only people I put on ignore are those who don't participate in or like such debates and instead engage in personal attacks.

And you obviously are not that kind of person.

16. I will have to be a Packers fan.
I'm not into sports and I'm a native Texan.

Guess I'll have to be a cheesehead. Dad was a Yankee from N.E. Ohio and was a union organizer for the Oilworkers (Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers) on the Houston Ship Channel, back in the bad old days of showing up on a picket line and getting your head busted open and getting your ass dragged to jail.

Present, former Packers say they back AFL-CIO
By Don Walker of the Journal Sentinel
February 15, 2011

Present and former members of the Green Bay Packers, all members of the National Football League Players Association, have signed a letter in support of the AFL-CIO's efforts to derail Gov. Scott Walker's plan to cut some union bargaining rights.

The letter was signed by Curtis Fuller, Chris Jackie, Charles Jordan, Bob Long, Steve Okoniewski, Brady Poppinga and Jason Spitz.

The statement reads:

"We know that it is teamwork on and off the field that makes the Packers and Wisconsin great. As a publicly owned team we wouldn't have been able to win the Super Bowl without the support of our fans.

"It is the same dedication of our public workers every day that makes Wisconsin run. They are the teachers, nurses and child care workers who take care of us and our families. But now in an unprecedented political attack Governor Walker is trying to take away their right to have a voice and bargain at work.

"The right to negotiate wages and benefits is a fundamental underpinning of our middle class. When workers join together it serves as a check on corporate power and helps ALL workers by raising community standards. Wisconsin's long standing tradition of allowing public sector workers to have a voice on the job has worked for the state since the 1930s. It has created greater consistency in the relationship between labor and management and a shared approach to public work.

"These public workers are Wisconsin's champions every single day and we urge the Governor and the State Legislature to not take away their rights."

The NFLPA also released a statement in support of the AFL-CIO. "The NFL Players Association will always support efforts protecting a worker's right to join a union and collectively bargain. Today, the NFLPA stands in solidarity with its organized labor brothers and sisters in Wisconsin," the statement said.

I have sort of been a Packer fan for years, and never heard of any of these guys. Okay, maybe Jackie was a kicker. But where's Chmura, Rison, Levins, Gilbert Brown, and Driver? Okay, some of those people went to play for other teams. Such is the world of sports.

But it's funny to see a list of seven guys I have never heard of.

That you're the second person on this thread to focus on who signed the statement rather than what it represents. There's a sports forum here if all you want to do is talk shit.

28. I'm not a sportsfan but this is very good to hear. I wonder what is
the view of the RW fans of this team? I know sports fans can have an intense passion for "their" team, and it will be interesting to see how the cognitive dissonance will play out with those that are also conservatives.
