Teachers Under Fire: At Least Nine States Propose Stripping Teachers Of Collective Bargaining Rights

By Pat Garofalo at 12:55 pm

Lawmakers in several states have launched a broadside against public employees, aiming to cut their pay, slash their benefits, and strip them of their collective bargaining rights. Pivoting off the myth that public employees are getting paid more than their private sector counterparts, governors and state legislatures are scapegoating public workers for their states’ respective budget woes.

One of the biggest targets for these conservatives have been teachers. In fact, lawmakers in at least seven states have proposed stripping teachers of some of their collective bargaining rights:

3. What happens to Unions affects every worker in America.
Get rid of the Union and the salaries are pushed
lower and lower. Republicans will do what ever they
can to get rid of Unions.

Right to Work States is the goal. Lower wages lower standards
of living.

6. I used to try and explain that fact to people when my Union was first coming under attack
Back then a lot of people just wanted to brag about their magic Toyotas and Hondas.

4. Sadly there are some around here that will cheer this move,
A sorry state we're in when nominal Democrats cheer the death of unions.

5. No wonder the MSM isn't giving Wisconsin much air time
And some of that, Belshi on CNN, misreported the Madison number as only "hundreds".

7. I told my parents today at lunch to keep a close eye on their union
and pension. At one time Texas was safe, but not anymore. Looks like Perfect Hair wants to do away with medicaid and public schools. Fuck Rick Perry...suck an egg you loser!

9. Perhaps if teachers were paid a decent salary, they would not need
unions or even tenure. It is the paltry scale which demands they be represented by a union. Senators and House members don't need a union because they provide for themselves just fine. But I'd like to see them live on a teacher's salary or work the long hours every teacher I know puts in. Hey, Senators and Reps, teachers get two or three paid vacation days a year, Christmas and New Years. How many do you get? President Obama, you can answer that question too. And don't all of you get a big check for life even if you're only there two years? Would you be willing to start at the starting salary of a teacher? Are you dedicated enough to even run for that measly pay?
How many of you have five years minimum of college behind you?
Get off the teachers. We're lucky most are willing to educate our children for the sheer love of it!
