A question for TN Duers
We've all heard of the reports of Wisconsin, but what you may not know is that there are plans to implement very similar anti-union policies here and I was just wondering if there any plans to organize to oppose it here? I can't get to Wisconsin but maybe I can help out here.

2. Yes...the state legislature is already
working against the teachers. It's very disheartening, but maybe this is what is takes for people to understand the GOP actually hates democracy.

4. I can't stand our State Legislature
their corrupt to the core. My Political Science teacher last year would often rant against them, calling them the most useless bunch of people ever assembled under one roof.

3. it's been in the news, they are ready to bust the unions here
The proposals were released a day after the state's biggest teachers union, the Tennessee Education Association, sparred with legislators over a separate measure that would overturn a 1978 law that gave them the power to bargain collectively with school boards.

7. Well if it makes you feel any better
I'm planning on writing a story on it for UT's Journalism Department's online news site.

8. The last time I know of Tenn getting
its act together was in 1946 in Athens TN and the men returning from WW2 came home and started the "Battle of Athens" and got rid of a political machine which had ruled for years and years. Unfortunately the machine was a Democratic machine and ever since East TN has been Republican. God could run for office as a Democrat and lose in East TN. If we could educate voters here we might make a difference.

12. I spent a few minutes on the phone with a woman.........
at the MNEA the other day and she was the one who told me about the March 5th date. So far, that's all I've heard as far as anything for the general public goes. I did call my state rep and senator's office and thank them for their opposition to the measures.

One thing that Haslem is doing here is that it's piecemeal. Not like Walker in WI trying to do it all at once. HOWEVER, we all know that this is just the first step. They'll take collective bargaining rights away from teachers. Then next time, it'll be the rest of the government workers. And finally, it wouldn't surprise me for them to try and outlaw it for private industry too.
