House Dem reveals abortion on the House floor
The debate was over GOP Rep. Mike Pence's drive to defund Planned Parenthood. Speier's outburst was triggered by GOP Rep. Chris Smith, who had read aloud graphic descriptions of abortion from a book only moments before. Speier responded:

"I really planned to speak about something else. But the gentleman from New Jersey just put my stomach in knots. Because I'm one of those women he spoke about just now. I had a procedure at 17 weeks pregnant with a child who moved from the vagina into the cervix. And that procedure that you just described is a procedure that I endured.

"I lost the baby. And for you to stand on this floor and suggest that somehow this is a procedure that is either welcomed or done cavalierly or done without any thought, is preposterous."

10. very happy to say that chris smith is no longer my representative.
would have preferred if that was because he lost re-election, but moving out of his district was the best i could do.

unseating chris shays was more doable, and am overall pretty pleased with himes.

12. Good on Ms. Speier

It took a lot of courage to say what she did. And Mike Pence can kiss my ass.

Men have no business whatsoever telling me or any other woman what to do with our bodies.

"If Pence cuts off my reproductive rights, can I cut off his?"

True... but when it comes to babies, it takes two, so I hope you'll let the father have a little say, huh?

But clearly, this is another case of "The world is just like my living room" mentality. Pence never thought one way or the other that someone who might have had the procedure might just be sitting across the aisle from him. Like the homophobe GOP senators who think that gays are all "somewhere else". Is it Inhofe who actually thinks there are no gays in his entire family? Like those homos.... there just aren't any women who have had abortions in their presence.... ever.

15. My Sympathy for Rep. Speier
I had the same procedure done when I miscarried my first child in 1975. The Nurse comforted me the night before the procedure saying. "It is how nature works, a fetus that just didn't have a chance to survive. It's God's way of correcting a mistake."

I mourned that little one, too early to know if it were boy or girl. I understand you clearly Rep. Speier and thank you.

18. If you are a woman over 55-60, you probably know someone who has had
" a procedure" or may have had one yourself. Younger women who have grown UP with reproductive choices & facilities that made them aware of their choices, do not know how it used to be.

As a kid, I remember my mother's friends talking in "hushed-tones" about their "D&C".

and lots of young women don;t know that you used to have to have your husband's "permission" to even get birth control pills..and many doctors would not prescribe it.

Single women did not always have access to the pill and would often get a NEW doctor, and make up a pretend husband so they could get a prescription.

Job interviewers ASKED you about your birth control method (if you were a young newlywed like I was when they asked me)..

38. Then we've really progressed.
I never, ever had a problem obtaining birth control pills or any contraception. I've never, ever been asked about family planning during a job interview. I've never even imagined that a man would have a say in whether or not I was allowed to avoid a pregnancy.

I owe this fantastic life to women who earned it for me and the men who helped them.

Thank you!

Wow.

I work in academia and I remember a colleague who said she finally quit allowing students to write about abortion b/c she had a student admit to having one in class and that's when she realized that in any given class, there could be a student who has had an abortion.

23. Rep. Chris Smith is notorious in the House -- often wonder how he has stayed in office ...
but then there is still computer voting --

otherwise I have to believe a large part of NJ is filled with anti-abortion

fanatics who have never had an abortion?

That has to be BS because even Catholics have as many abortions as any other women --

PLUS Catholics supports single payer/government run health care at almost the same

percentages that 76%+ of Americans support it!!

And, Catholics want reproductive health care included -- all the way to abortion and

simply CHOICE of abortion -- 51% in that regard!

That's why the Catholic Bishops were chasing down Pelosi and a call came from Rome!

The RCC church has lost control over women and their families re abortion -- and the

RCC is seeking to re-establish that control over women's bodies by influencing the

American government and our elected officials to stop supporting reproductive freedom!!

THANK YOU FOR THE HEARTS -- AND HERE'S A  BACK -- !!!

The faux comity of the House members makes me sick. She was right to call him out but I wish she had gone even farther. People like Reps Pence and Smith are scum who do not deserve to be treated with any respect at all.

29. I've met a lot of idiots who think that the only way you get
a handicapped child is from a 'botched abortion'. I have a handicapped daughter, from a genetic anomaly, and have run into these people on the street, and they will shake their fingers at you and say 'I know what you did' , 'You should be ashamed' and things like that. We need good education on what can happen with a pregnancy. All the different causes, and dangers etc. Then we won't have these stupid idiots trying to make stupid policy concerning women's bodies.

33. Thank you, Rep. Spier. For getting to the crux of this patronizing bullshit.
Anyone who tries to tell women- hell, anyone who tries to tell anyone- that they're not capable of making their own damn decisions about their own bodies and own lives.. really, can fuck off.

It goes back to that ancient, idiotic idea of Western Religion that our bodies don't belong to us, they belong to "God". (And since "God" can't tell us, directly, what to do, we have to look to his divinely anointed representatives in government, i.e. the King-- or whoever else is in charge)

From this core philosophical principle you get all manner of authoritarian bullshit telling people how to live their lives. Homophobia and anti-gay bigotry. The drug war. Censorship. Laws that say terminally ill people should suffer against their will instead of being able to choose a pain-free, dignified exit on their own terms. And of course, the never-ending war against reproductive freedom.

Time to tell these clods, once and for all: MIND YOUR OWN FUCKING BUSINESS.
