WASHINGTON – Colin Powell's ex-chief of staff said Thursday the former Secretary of State was lied to and manipulated by Vice President Dick Cheney into justifying the US invasion of Iraq.

The primary justifications offered by the Bush administration for invading Iraq were that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and had possible links to Al-Qaeda. Both turned out to be false.

Iraqi defector "Curveball," ostensibly a source corroborating Hussein's biological and chemical weapons program, this week admitted he knowingly concocted the story in an effort to get rid of the dictator.

12. Hey, many of us in jobs far more humble and less-"inside the Beltway" knew it.
All you had to do was some research. ALL you had to do was read ever so slightly beyond the stuff you were furnished and force-fed, colin. ALL you had to do was seek out a second opinion - NO, A REAL SECOND OPINION. I don't mean strolling down the hall from cheney's office and asking scooter libby or david addington or paul wolfowitz about it. An INDEPENDENT second opinion. There were lots of them out there. We certainly found them, with far fewer tools and connections and "access" than you had.

:nopity:

Powell's would-be "Adlai Stevenson"-like moment at UN in February 2003 will still haunt him for the rest of his life. Just because Bush/Cheney wanted to go into Iraq so badly doesn't mean that he had to turn off his critical thinking skills at their request. Furthermore, if he really didn't believe in what he was saying or what Bush/Cheney wanted to do, a "protest resignation" might've been very powerful in stopping movement towards the invasion IMHO and preventing the subsequent catastrophe. Unfortunately, Powell chose.........poorly.

That I would believe. You knew they had something on the guy at the time. His stammering and weird body language. Sorry, Powell did the country wrong of his own choosing.
