Libyan Revolution Tweets Part 5
Libyan Revolution Tweets Part 5

Previous Parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

Libya protests: 'Terror and bribery are blunt tools now'
Author Hisham Matar pleads with Muammar Gaddafi to hold his troops back

Hisham Matar
guardian.co.uk, Friday 18 February 2011 20.50 GMT

...

The regime became nervous, promising students a large number of generous scholarships abroad. Then it vowed to increase salaries.

...

On the 16th, a day before the planned protests, Libyan's could no longer wait. They went out in Benghazi. There was a palpable fear that the hot-blooded second city was going it alone, that the few thousand protesters were lambs going to slaughter. Their courage seemed unimaginable.

Late that night one of the Benghazi protestors posted a video on YouTube. He looked tired. His voice was hoarse.

"To my brothers in Tripoli," he said, "we can't do this alone."

26. When world leaders respond decisively, it stops
massacres and genocides in their tracks, if they respond early enough and clearly enough. Some years ago I was a student of such things (there is actually a sub-discipline within revolutionary sociology), and though I've lost track of some of the sources, I do remember that was the consensus among academics.

It may be too late for that in Libya, but at least some restraint or delay would be worth the effort. At the very least, further arms flights could be stopped.

I can't get this quote from Emerson out of my head: "When you strike at a king, you must kill him."

Among the Egyptians it was spoken, and among poor and homeless USians, it is being said the same way.

Death is better than suffering in silence.

Libya protests: Gaddafi sends in snipers to silence the dissent
Women and children leapt from bridges to their deaths as they tried to escape a ruthless crackdown by Libyan forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

By Nick Meo, Cairo 8:15PM GMT 19 Feb 2011

Snipers shot protesters, artillery and helicopter gunships were used against crowds of demonstrators, and thugs armed with hammers and swords attacked families in their homes as the Libyan regime sought to crush the uprising.

...

It was centred on Benghazi, 600 miles east of the capital, where a human rights activist lawyer was arrested on Tuesday. Chanting crowds, tens of thousands strong, filled the streets and police reportedly fled or joined the protesters, as unrest spread to surrounding towns. Fighting also broke out in the cities of Al-Bayda, Ajdabiya, Zawiya, and Darnah, with witnesses reporting piles of dead. Hospitals made frantic appeals for blood to treat wards full of wounded people.

...

Reports from Benghazi gave a very different picture of the crisis, describing how the city's residents battled brutal security forces sent from the capital. One man, who gave his name only as Mohammed, told the BBC: "The army are joining the people, the people are going out of their homes and fighting street by street and they are winning."

...

Omar, a 24-year-old civil servant in Benghazi, who asked for his surname to be withheld, said: "Gaddafi is reacting to the protests with utter ruthlessness. Tanks are on the streets, and there are running battles between armed killers and protesters. Some of the soldiers have been so disgusted by what is going on that they have swapped sides."

BP Expanding Oil Interest in Libya
Posted on: August 19th, 2009 by Jason Drew

BP will be looking to expand its energy interests in Libya. The energy market is expected to boom in Libya, as British companies begin to invest more heavily in the country.

...

“Our initial investment in the joint venture is $900m (£545m) but if we find oil investment could rise to $20bn over the next two decades,” a spokesman for BP said.

BG Group, a UK-based gas producer, has also been investing in Libya’s gas reserves since as early as 2005. The two companies began looking to Libya for oil after former Prime Minister Tony Blair visited the country to improve upon once strained relations between the two governments.

Reports have found that Libya is well endowed with the majority of Africa’s oil, and the country’s oil reserves have, as of yet, not been fully developed. Libya relies heavily on profits from oil sales, and overseas investments could help the nation to capitalise on its oil stock.

Hadayek Centre, I told you about it a while ago, which was burned, the burning was by a hand-made bomb or “”Jalatina.”" It was completely burned and anti-Gaddafi slogans written on the walls. And the protesters took control of three tanks in front of the courthouse to the north, because, before their eyes, they were crushing privately owned cars. The protesters are protecting private and public property, civilian property not military, of course they are destroying anything belonging to the regime but civilian properties and places that offer social and economic services are not being touched, they are being protected. They are directing traffic and cleaning the streets, while the regime is attacking private property. The tanks crushed cars and they are destroyed, we have videos of the tanks destroying the cars, but the internet is down so we can’t upload them, this is why the protesters took control of the three tanks. And now the protesters are using Molotovs and are repelling the other side.
