Bullshit Alert! Crooks and Liars Busts the "Doctors Writing Excuses" Story

The MacIver "news wire" has an interesting quote, however:

On Saturday, a group of men and women in lab coats purporting to be doctors were handing out medical excuse notes, without examining the ‘patients.’

“I asked this doctor what he was doing and he told me they were handing out excuses to people who were feeling sick due to emotional, mental or financial distress,” said Christian Hartsock. “They never performed an exam–he asked me how I was feeling today and I said I’m from California and I’m not used to the cold, so he handed me a note.”

Looks like Christian Hartsock is just an ordinary guy, eh? Well, he's not.

Christian Hartsock, 24, is a director, screenwriter, producer and political columnist and activist. He earned his B.A. in Film and Video Production from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara and currently produces, directs, and writes films including the music video for Guns 'N Roses' "Sorry," as well as the conservative rap music video Victicrat and the short film Sycophant which he wrote and directed, as well as the award-winning feature film The Lives of Better Men which he produced.

Hartsock directed the undercover investigation video Teachers Unions Gone Wild which exposed sleaze and corruption in the New Jersey Education Association, earning the accolades of Governor Chris Christie, produced B-roll for James O'Keefe's and Hannah Giles' investigation videos that brought down ACORN, exposed anti-Americanism at the UN Climate Summit in Cancun and continues to work on investigative journalism videos. He's traveled to Iraq with Move America Forward to document the Iraq war and was profiled in CNN's documentary Right on the Edge a documentary about young conservative activists hosted by Abbie Boudreau. He currently writes for several news and commentary websites, including Big Government and Big Journalism, and is Editor-in-Chief of Political Vanguard.

3. We has a wee troll here, Thursday
...pushing a video from the MacIver Institute. MacIver Institute is part of the State Policy Network - a collection of "free-market" ideologues:

Right in Breitbart and O'Keefe's zone.

Here's the info I found on them that I posted in that thread:

WHO IS THE MACIVER INSTITUTE
The MacIver Institute is a conservative, pro-corporate organization founded in 2009 to advance conservative ideas and values. Its top staff is long-time Republican campaign strategists and its board of directors includes leading Republicans, most notably Mark Block, the head of Americans for Prosperity-WI, Fred Lubar, deep-pocketed Republican donor and Jim Troupis, lawyer to leading Republicans such as Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen and ethically-challenged Supreme Court Justices Mike Gableman and Annette Ziegler.

Staff: MacIver’s top staffers include both the former Chief of Staff to Scott Jensen and former GOP state senate caucus head and campaign strategist for top Republicans including Attorney General JB Van Hollen.
~~~
MACIVER METHODS
MacIver has begun dispatching a new staffer, former Rock County television reporter Bill Osmulski, to events to film events and create conservative propaganda pieces as “news reports.” These “reports” are put onto the MacIver website and available for public consumption.
~~~
CREDIBILITY
Immediately after it hired its phony news “reporter,” MacIver was plunged into controversy when it was confirmed the MacIver staffer had gotten an interview with two elected officials by allowing the two elected officials “to think he was just interviewing the two politicians for a local television station, all three men confirmed...”

There's more at that link.

So, it is Republican led, has a rightwing agenda and has already been caught misrepresenting itself to push its agenda. Very Breitbart-like.

7. Video of this "story" is all over the Fox News.
I was forced to listen to it while in the lunchroom this evening. They had numerous legal "experts" on there calling the demonstrators criminal, and hinting at a deep, dark liberal conspiracy.

The very phrase "liberal conspiracy" seems oxymoronic to me.

8. I don't give two shits about the supposed "controversy"
The doctors can do as they please. If they did anything wrong some board somewhere will determine that. Who cares?

However, I'm not sure how this means that C&N busted the story? Just that one of numerous people that claimed they got a note has an agenda. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Edited on Sat Feb-19-11 11:17 PM by madmom
excuses aren't they, the doctors, the ones who are committing the crime? First if they are not REAL doctors, isn't it against the law to impersonate a doctor? or if they are real doctors and writing fake slips are they not committing fraud? So what is it that protesters are supposed to have done that's so wrong?:shrug:

19. Right, so it is the fake doctor who is doing wrong NOT the person getting the excuse. If these
doctors are real can they be arrested for fraud or if they are not doctors that is also illegal. That's why I'm having trouble figuring it out. If beitbart was tricking people by giving them fake doctors noted then they (the "doctors") committed the crime not the person taking the note, so I don't understand what they would hope to accomplish with this.

were found lying in the gutters? I doubt that many kept them to use.

And the guy from California wasn't even a Wisconsin teacher from the sound of it.

12. Dr. Frist "examined" Terry Schiavo via video, and gave his diagnosis
These doctors actually SAW the patients in person and it's eminently clear their patients are stressed! Stress is a legal diagnosis.

If a video exam is good enough for Dr. Frist, a real-time look by a real doctor should be even better.

22. There's a whole insidious network
...of wingnut sites and organizations that cooperate with each other to spread propaganda and disinformation - some of them having existed for decades. The MacIver Institute operates in conjunction with the State Policy Network, who partners with groups such as the Leadership Institute, a most sinister media manipulation training organization, started by Morton Blackwell and boasting noted graduates such as: Mitch McConnell, Karl Rove, James (GUCKERT) Gannon, Grover Norquist and current right-wing pop stars James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles.

23. I understand that, just trying to figure out what is going on here. I think it is some of those
asswholes who are putting out these film clips, to try and discredit what is happening. I was just thinking about Jimmy-Jeff (guckert gannon) and was wondering what ever happened to that man of ill repute.

25. Well, of course they're attempting to discredit
I've not seen this particular video and frankly consider this doctor note thing a non-issue. What chills me to the bone is how these people work in rapid concert with a major broadcast network to discredit and obfuscate democratic, progressive interests.

This shit has got to stop.

26. Thank you. They are "exposing" that doctors talk with people and sign a note saying they did so?
And? It is a non-issue beyond trying to smear someone, as far as I can tell.
