12K State Workers Could Be Fired Without Budget Deal, Wisconsin Governor Warns

If changes aren't made to the benefit contributions paid by Wisconsin's nearly 300,000 public sector employees, about 10,000-12,000 workers will lose their jobs, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker warned Sunday.

The Republican governor has been targeted by protesters for nearly a week for negotiating a bill now in the state Senate that would require workers to increase their contributions to pensions and health care coverage, would limit collective bargaining rules and tie raises to inflation.

"I don't want a single person laid off in the public nor in the private sector and that's why this is a much better alternative than losing jobs," Walker told "Fox News Sunday."

1. If I were a state worker, I'd camp out in the capitol and say:
Bring it on!

The only answer is continued, sustained sit-ins in the capitol, enough
to shut down government for a long time.

2. I wonder if he explained how getting rid of collective bargaining saves jobs.
No need to answer that.

24. BINGO! I think I've read where the state worker's unions...........
have actually agreed to his budget proposals. They just haven't agreed to giving up they're collective bargaining rights. Unless we fight this, the ultimate goal is to get rid of unions all together. A total ban on collective bargaining and unions. A law against worker's organizing.

There is name calling all over the thread -- they need to hear loud and clear that this is a strategy to set working and middle class people against each other.

9. The College Dropout Governor Wants to Have His Cake and Eat It Too
He wants workers to provide all the needed state services and do it for less money and less control over their own work lives. He doesn't want to fire workers making it impossible for them to provide the needed services that Wisconsin citizens want and need. That would reflect back negatively on him and make people realize how much they need those workers and the services they provide. The problem is that those workers have the least extra money to sacrifice while the wealthy could sacrifice by paying higher taxes to make it unnecessary to fire anyone. This is about who sacrifices, the wealthy or the middle class.

...they will never, ever join the upper classes.

King Scott is doing all he can to hasten that realization.

10. This is a heavy-handed ploy used by those in charge to make their underlings fall in line.
It works. Most people would rather take the cut in pay and benefits rather than be responsible for their fellow workers (and maybe themselves) getting a pink slip.

When you have the political majority (as they do in WI), it should be possible to get the gov to back down. We lost that fight in Indiana.

12. Reagan got away with it..
This guy is thinking he can too...and he probably will (at least in the short-run).

Let's think this through though.

If he fires them, he will be a "hero" to the ones who replace the fired workers. The unions will be "defeated", and will be playing catch-up for a long time (maybe never to recover)

The right wingers will see Walker as a decisive, strong, no-nonsense leader. They eat this stuff up.

He will pay no long-lasting price for his boldness. He's emulating Chris Christie who also is emulating Reagan.

There's a reason why the right canonized Reagan , and continues to keep looking for another one.. a younger version of him. Just like dems who look for another Kennedy, republicans always want another Reagan.

They never look past the façade though, because the puppetmaster of the Reagan puppet was GHWBush.

The new-breed of right wing bully seems to be self-operating, except for the financial "strings" that trace back to the likes of the Koch Brothers & Rove-esque funders.

During a financial downturn like we have, and with the massive numbers of unemployed, there will be NO shortage of people willing to fill openings left by departing union members.

People will grumble & gripe for a while, but life will go on, and by the time the next election rolls around, not much will have really changed..except for the people who lost their jobs, and the people who took those jobs....and of course the people in charge who will phony-up all the stats they need, to show how "effective" their methods were..

23. Wisconsin Police & Fire Unions need to weigh in... Now!
Walker is playing the Union Busting 101 "divide & conquer" card by promising (for now)to hold the Police and Fire Unions harmless. This obviously a feint, since Police & Fire eat up a bigger chunk of Municipal budgets than unionized civil service workers by far. Once he destroys AFSCME and SEIU, and the commotion dies down as Wisconsin gets pushed off the front pages, he'll be after the Police & Fire Unions.

They need to weigh in now- today- in support of their Union brothers and sisters, or they will be easy pickings during Walker's next budget "crisis".

27. They have weighed in.
Watch some of the You Tube videos, and some of the things posted here. The firemen are there, in full gear, playing bagpipes. The cops are there too, with their signs that say, "Cops for Labor." The on-duty police have been extra helpful to the demonstrators, because they are all on the same side. There is so much solidarity there that it makes me cry.

The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association has made a public statement
about how they regret their endorsement of Walker - in all caps no less.

I SPECIFICALLY REGRET THE ENDORSEMENT OF THE WISCONSIN TROOPER’S ASSOCIATION FOR GOVERNOR SCOTT WALKER. I REGRET THE GOVERNOR’S DECISION TO “ENDORSE” THE TROOPERS AND INSPECTORS OF THE WISCONSIN STATE PATROL. I REGRET BEING THE RECIPIENT OF ANY OF THE PERCIEVED BENEFITS PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNOR’S ANNOINTING

I assure all of you the real problem isn’t any of us!! Like barbarians at the gate the Governor has swept in with his entourage and turned us all against each other. We are at each other’s throats like something out of a science horror thriller.
