Stress

I can't talk too long. It's my own fault.

I have to give a 90-minute presentation tomorrow at one of the NYS Universities. I should have prepared weeks ago.

Why did I wait until the last minute?

Interestingly, the presentation is, in part, on stress. In particular, I'm talking about the stress that the American legal system can cause for a person accused of a crime that he/she did not commit.

What causes you stress? How do you deal with it?

3. Procrastination. That's my major cause of stress.
I know better but I let things go to the last minute. Then I do a pretty damn good job but with serious consequences to my mental health and physical stamina.

I've always been fascinated by the unjustly accused. Some never "cave" to the police interrogation, others do. I would imagine that there's more stress involved for those who "caved" under the intense police interrogation - they know they're innocent but the stress of the moment must be unbearable. And then they have the stress of backtracking their story to prove their innocence.

That story of the stepdad who was just acquitted of killing his stepdaughter here in IL.... heartbreaking. The stress of that situation blew their marriage apart.

6. My family (father, etc.).
My solution is to send cards and avoid him.

Other things which bring stress is financial--probably the biggest one.

7. Okay.
Much better. Got my outline done.

Originally, I was only supposed to speak for an hour. I'm glad I got that extended.

11. Thanks.
My problem is that there are four major issues that I want to discuss. At first, I was being limited to an hour. That's just not enough time. I was able to secure 90 minutes, which is better. However, for some reason -- advanced age? -- I took that improvement as license to put off doing my outline.

As I'm sure you can imagine, I can talk a lot on any issue that interests me. And, in order to make my presentation be more meaningful than simply providing information as dry as that in their text book, I'll try to engage the students in a conversation that is meaningful in the context of their own lives.

I'd prefer three hours. Two would be okay. But I can fit it into 90 minutes. Maybe.

10. My own expectations of what something should look like
or be like is what causes me stress. To combat that I try to find some humor in the situation, take some deep breaths and distract myself with something unrelated. And then I feel that I can re-approach whatever it is with a relaxed mindset and it generally goes much more quickly and usually better than I anticipated.

Looks like you did something similar! Hope it went well!

13. Mission Accomplished
I had a lot of fun this evening. I think that the students enjoyed it, too. A third of the class stayed after to talk more. Good sign.
