Republican Governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels Calls On State GOP To Abandon Union-Busting Bill
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 06:01 PM by no limit
Great news!

Members of the Democratic state House caucus in Indiana have found an unlikely ally in their quest to stop the GOP majority from pushing through a bill that critics say would destroy union organizing in the state. Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) took to the airwaves today to call on members of his party to drop the controversial "right to work" bill that led to Democrats going AWOL.

Daniels made the following statement about going after democrats who fled his state:

"I'm not sending the state police after anybody. I'm not gonna divert a single trooper from their job of protection the Indiana public. I trust that people's consciences will bring them back to work. ... For reasons I've explained more than once I thought there was a better time and place to have this very important and legitimate issue raised."

I guess he saw the public opinion polling coming from Wisconsin and decided to change his mind.

I feel like maggie thatcher talking about her first encounter with Mikhail Gorbachev - "I think we can do business with him."

Not feeling exactly THAT generous towards mitch daniels, but at least he's made the gesture. So noted.

And it just struck me that maybe mitch daniels has his finger to the wind. Maybe he's starting to feel that this might be creating a rising tide of backlash against him and his fellow GOP governors/hard-asses. There was a thread about that here earlier (apologies to the DUer who posted it - I don't remember now) of speculation and apparent gossip within GOP circles, worrying that this will lose them Wisconsin in 2012. And mitch daniels has already been mentioned as a possible presidential contender. IF it indeed is what's happening here, then we may actually win this one. Hmmm... wonder if some of the republi-CON strategists are looking ahead to 2012 and worrying that this union-busting will be a loser at the polls?

After all, when you get down to it, republi-CONS will do ONLY what is their own self-interest. It's trickle-down that starts with them. If it's good for them, then let's do it! Because if it's good for them, it should eventually trickle down to being good for everybody else... (Shouldn't it, david stockman?)

6. He won't back down.
He's going to be ran out of the state before he ever gives up. If he's so worried about tax revenue and his state budget, close the state tax loop holes and make the corporations pay freaking taxes!

7. Well, seeing him run out of the state doesn't sound half bad either.

3. Presidential ambition. He knows that he will NEVER win a national election
if he screws the unions.

He could give a rat's ass about unions. It's all about his national ambitions.

4. Well, if you're thinking it, and I'm thinking it, and there's some whispering in the GOP
grassroots by others at that level thinking it...

Hmmm...

And yes, you're quite correct - he doesn't give a rat's ass about unions. NONE of these assholes does. Not one. They're just trying to play presidential campaign chess and they're trying to think two or three moves ahead. YES it will SHIT your presidential ambitions, mitchy-boy. You're damned straight about that!

ESPECIALLY if there's public momentum in support of the protesters. If they stand strong, and the Wisconsin Dems stand strong, and nobody caves, and they face down threats of layoffs and firings and they STILL stand strong, public opinion may be with them. I mean, just look at the rather vigorous and extremely appealing sidebar story of Ian's Pizza and ALL THE DONATIONS coming in from all over the freakin' WORLD. THIRTY-ONE countries at last count on their ever-changing and expanding blackboard - that they're posting on Facebook every time they update, and that people like us repost and share and blog about and spread the word about. It's our own little Egypt after all, isn't it?

We simply MUST keep up the pressure and Keep Standing Strong. That's the only thing the bad guys understand and respect, particularly since they're used to our side caving all the frickin' time!

I can never forget the one statement from george w. bush, campaigning in 2004, repeating "you may not agree with me, but you know where I stand."

A statement like that resonates with EVERYBODY. Guaranteed.

5. The problem for these republicans is that by doing this they can't really win primaries

so it's a double wedge sword. It wouldn't suprise me if he is trying to stand out by trying to seem more moderate since everyone else in the republican party is kissing the ass of the tea party.
