They said on MSNBC there are 15 states trying to pass anti-union bills.

disgusts me. I don't remember the name of the woman involved but I saw her interview on channel 8 out of Columbia, MO. My kid had to tell me to put the hair brush down after I almost threw it at the television.

And I know a number of AFSCME members here in Missouri who are very worried about losing what they do have. They are nearly frantic about what's happening, especially since some administrators of facilities have informed them that they have no plans to listen to the union.

He's a real piece of crap. I refused to vote for him and Denny Hoskins, my state rep. Their campaigns were horrible and they attempted to damage the reputation of their opponents on all levels.

And some people are convinced that's a good idea.

She is saying something that seems to have a tiny grain of truth to it so anything she says after will be believed by some.

There are child labor laws that prevent children under a certain age from working. She throws in babysitting and paper routes, two classic coming of age type jobs. What she's done is twisted even that. Teens can babysit but they can't work in a day care with a number of children. They can have paper routes but they can't work routes that need a driver.

They've played this off just right and some are falling for it. I'm surprised that there isn't more of an uproar on DU about this.

The question has to do with the states that have anti-union bills pending in their legislatures!

The anti-union bills are the bills that would take away bargaining rights and would bust the unions!

I feel like most of my adopted state is full of lemmings.

I thought kids could already do that. I babysat at 13 or 14, I think...that was a long time ago, but I that's what I remember.

My local newspaper advertises for ages 13 and up for delivery. The local Red Cross offers babysitting clinics at age 12 for babysitting.

At age 14 you can do farmwork. I walked the bean fields at that age and I know kids who still do it to this day. (Hell, with this economy, I might just do it again this summer for extra money.)

She's making it sound good but it's really a way to drop all the laws, taking away the limits on the hours they can work, the machinery they can use, etc. If this passes children can be scheduled to work during the school day and well past 7 pm. The law is worded in such a way that, as long as they throw a cot in the room and offer a few hours break, they can work more hours than adults.

(Just wanted to add: not only more hours, but they can earn "training wages" at that, since they are under 18.)

They'd love to bring back child labor and undercut even the stagnating wages of adult workers. Why can't anyone do math? Child earners don't really put $ back into the economy with the kind of purchases that get the engine going. It's baffling.

But the senator who is really promoting this is making it sound as if it's all about allowing kids to have piddly jobs that teach them a bit of responsibility. She said that teens should have the chance to earn spending money to buy sodas and see a movie.

This bill isn't about that at all. It's about repealing child labor laws. It's about guaranteeing that lower middle class persons like myself lose their jobs to teens and cannot find another because the kids can be paid four dollars an hour and don't have any limits on how many hours they can work without receiving overtime or even breaks. It's about creating a generation of poor teens who will have to drop out of school because the employers will only hire them and not their parents.

From what I'd heard with just one interview I knew it was crazy and that there is no way I'm supporting it. Problem is that I can't get my senator to pin himself down one way or another-at least not in public.

is a Dem, so I know he will not support it, unfortunately there just are not enough of them in the Senate.

I live there and it's pretty much a completely Democratic state. I didn't see it mentioned on that map outlining anti-union activities. Are you sure that is correct, and if so what is the situation?

But I think that they were including MA along with PA and NJ as the Easterns states the other day on the TV during an interview.

This is making me so angry. He's a Democrat. I voted for him in November and he is full of shit. I have no clue why this is turning into a Republican v Democrat thing because there is absolutely NO GUARANTEE that Democrats are on the side of public employee unions.
