What are the FIFTEEN states that are trying to pass anti-union bills?
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 07:40 PM by Tx4obama
They said on MSNBC there are 15 states trying to pass anti-union bills.

Wisconsin
Ohio
Indiana
Iowa
Nebraska
Florida
Alabama
Tennessee
Missouri
Idaho
Minnesota
Michigan

WHAT ARE THE OTHER THREE STATES?

Note: The final three are Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

p.s. Mitch Daniels in Indiana and Rick Scott in Florida both said today that they were NOT against collective bargaining.

Edited to add: Missouri, Idaho, Minnesota, and Michigan.

18. The child labor law bill
disgusts me. I don't remember the name of the woman involved but I saw her interview on channel 8 out of Columbia, MO. My kid had to tell me to put the hair brush down after I almost threw it at the television.

And I know a number of AFSCME members here in Missouri who are very worried about losing what they do have. They are nearly frantic about what's happening, especially since some administrators of facilities have informed them that they have no plans to listen to the union.

One of the GOP senators pushing the RTW bill is David Pearce.

He's a real piece of crap. I refused to vote for him and Denny Hoskins, my state rep. Their campaigns were horrible and they attempted to damage the reputation of their opponents on all levels.

I believe it is Senate Bill 222.

Here is the link with the charming sponsor Cunningham.

42. I don't know.
She is saying something that seems to have a tiny grain of truth to it so anything she says after will be believed by some.

There are child labor laws that prevent children under a certain age from working. She throws in babysitting and paper routes, two classic coming of age type jobs. What she's done is twisted even that. Teens can babysit but they can't work in a day care with a number of children. They can have paper routes but they can't work routes that need a driver.

They've played this off just right and some are falling for it. I'm surprised that there isn't more of an uproar on DU about this.

That is NOT a list of states that have anti-union bills pending.
A list of 'right to work' states is NOT what the question was.
The question has to do with the states that have anti-union bills pending in their legislatures!

He's also busy trying to shove some sort of 30-year gas energy plan down our throats that will end up costing us plenty.

Just watch Mitch flip, as soon as the bucks roll his way.

14. Florida GOP right now have a bill aimed at limiting how union dues are used.
And guess what they want to curtail. Union dues used for any type of political activity, including support of political candidates.

The FL GOP is going about this union busting in a piecemeal fashion, under the radar.

They think.

I will be very happy to see the national scrutiny turn toward what these creeps in Florida are pushing.

17. I don't know about MSNBC but this was on Labor Notes today:

http://www.labornotes.org/2011/02/shock-and-law-politicians-push-anti-worker-bills

"Shock and Law: Politicians Push Anti-Worker Bills
Mark Brenner
| February 22, 2011

Labor’s 2011 political battles don’t end at the Beltway. Anti-union forces are pushing bills and ballot measures to limit workers’ rights and curb union power from Maine to Hawaii.

They’re gunning not just for public employees but for workers across the board. Legislators are debating proposals to ban collective bargaining for public employees, prohibit workers from choosing union representation through card check, and much more. In Missouri a senator even proposed repealing the state’s child labor law."

Hopefully that might help.

20. Supposedly the child labor law is about
allowing children the opportunity to babysit, have a paper route, or mow lawns. Of course, we all know they are full of shit but I've heard people agree that it's a "good thing".

I feel like most of my adopted state is full of lemmings.

23. As far as I know, they can.
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 08:22 PM by xmas74
My local newspaper advertises for ages 13 and up for delivery. The local Red Cross offers babysitting clinics at age 12 for babysitting.

At age 14 you can do farmwork. I walked the bean fields at that age and I know kids who still do it to this day. (Hell, with this economy, I might just do it again this summer for extra money.)

She's making it sound good but it's really a way to drop all the laws, taking away the limits on the hours they can work, the machinery they can use, etc. If this passes children can be scheduled to work during the school day and well past 7 pm. The law is worded in such a way that, as long as they throw a cot in the room and offer a few hours break, they can work more hours than adults.

(Just wanted to add: not only more hours, but they can earn "training wages" at that, since they are under 18.)

25. Gotcha.
They'd love to bring back child labor and undercut even the stagnating wages of adult workers. Why can't anyone do math? Child earners don't really put $ back into the economy with the kind of purchases that get the engine going. It's baffling.

26. Exactly.
But the senator who is really promoting this is making it sound as if it's all about allowing kids to have piddly jobs that teach them a bit of responsibility. She said that teens should have the chance to earn spending money to buy sodas and see a movie.

This bill isn't about that at all. It's about repealing child labor laws. It's about guaranteeing that lower middle class persons like myself lose their jobs to teens and cannot find another because the kids can be paid four dollars an hour and don't have any limits on how many hours they can work without receiving overtime or even breaks. It's about creating a generation of poor teens who will have to drop out of school because the employers will only hire them and not their parents.

From what I'd heard with just one interview I knew it was crazy and that there is no way I'm supporting it. Problem is that I can't get my senator to pin himself down one way or another-at least not in public.
