Evan Byah, his wife and several other Americans were caught in the New Zealand earthquake
U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo of Illinois, traveling with other members of Congress in New Zealand, left Christchurch today less than 2½ hours before a devastating earthquake struck, an aide said.

Manzullo, from Egan, and the other lawmakers are on a trade mission to New Zealand and Australia.

The others in the delegation were Reps. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), Kevin Brady (R-Texas), Rick Larsen (D-Wash.), Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) and Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) Delegates who represent American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands also were in the group.

Former U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh and his wife Susan were also in New Zealand when the quake struck, but an aide said they "are both OK."

1. And that ex coast guard guy Thad Allen was there too.

Why the hell are taxpayers paying for trips to New Zealand and Australia?

WASTEFUL SPENDING!

Trips overseas need to be CUT.

They are just freebie vacations!

2. About five years ago, I was in Christchurch for one night on business
on my way to Australia. One night of sleep after 22 hours of flying, and we had an earthquake at 3:00 AM, woke me up, hotel room bed and other items danced around, I did not die. Woke up and left for Melbourne, it was a night to remember, major shaking in bed and no women were involved!

Christchurch is a major city, tons of tall buildings...etc. feel very sorry for the people :(

4. I'm glad you did not die
That would have made it very difficult to respond to this thread.
