Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 6, Part 10 (Richard III in a bad & dangerous way)
Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 6, Part 10 (Richard III in a bad & dangerous way)

"Let fall thy lance: despair, and die!" - Shakespeare, The Life and Death of Richard the Third, Act 5, Scene III, Bosworth Field

The world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors remaining in first place

Today's threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

5. Gaddafi needs no foreign aid
Gaddafi needs no foreign aid... to buy the mercenaries to shoot at his own people. He has huge amounts of revenue from oil to pay for anything he wants.

I can only imagine how much of the oil revenue goes through his family. He's about as corrupt as they get.

It's not that hard to figure out. But they are not doing anything at all which has not gone unnoticed by people who are watching this in horror.

Libya Video: Qaddafi's 90-Minute Speech

A portion, in three videos, of Libya leader Muammar Qaddafi's 90-minute stream of consciousness on Tuesday:

Part 1 of 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJEA6qw471k&feature=player_embedded#at=106

Part 3 of 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gQt8Phm_bM&feature=player_embedded

Short version is "Gaddafi speaks to his supporters in the Green Square, you dirty greasy rats high on hallucinogenics given to you by Al-Qaeda, Israel and the US driving around in my tanks without green armbands on and all because some guy on a bicycle got away. And we are not scared of any cats, or any rats Oh and tomorrow I plan to shoot you all. You're lucky I haven't used force yet, you ungrateful drugged out greasy rats, when I do everything will burn. I'll exterminate you and purify the villages. It's all out war now. Those of you who love me, go rout the rebels, put on your green armbands tomorrow, get out in the streets and exterminate those greasy rats in their lairs, house by house" and inch by inch."

23. A picture for the ages.
While I was looking for something else I ran across this picture for the ages. It might have been posted before.

It's from the 3rd Africa-EU Summit, 29 – 30 November 2010 in Tripoli. How prescient were the great leaders?

http://www.africa-eu-partnership.org/3rd-africa-eu-summit
"Under the overarching theme of "Investment, Economic Growth and Job Creation", Heads of States and Governments addressed key issues, like peace and security, climate change, regional integration and private sector development, infrastructure and energy, agriculture and food security, migration."

Looks like they left out revolution and democracy, otherwise it all reads like a mission statement. In all fairness though, there is far more really worthwhile cooperation between the EU and Africa than most people realize.

Short version is that he's played nice up until now and that if the dirty greasy rats on hallucinogenics driving around in his tanks don't stop right now he's going to exterminate them house by house and inch by inch. And no, he knows nothing about mercenaries, the only people who hired mercenaries are the kids who took the drugs the CIA and AlQaeda is giving them.

U.S. Government Chartered Ferry Evacuation

February 22, 2011

A U.S. Government chartered ferry will depart Tripoli from the As-shahab Port in central Tripoli, located on the sea road across from the Radisson Blu Mahari Hotel, for Valletta, Malta on Wednesday, February 23. Processing of passengers will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. local time. U.S. citizen travelers wishing to depart should proceed as soon as possible after 9:00 a.m. to the pier and arrive no later than 10:00 a.m. U.S. citizens will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to persons with medical emergencies or severe medical conditions. The ferry will depart no later than 3:00 p.m.

Travelers should bring valid travel documents and any necessary medications.

Each traveler may bring one suitcase and a small personal carry-on item. Although pets are allowed on the ferry, any pets transported to Malta must meet stringent European Union requirements, which can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/ list_third_en.htm. The U.S. Embassies in Tripoli and Valletta are unable to assist U.S. citizens in obtaining the necessary documents and/or meeting other EU requirements for pet travel. Please note it is routine for pets to be rigorously examined and quarantined for six weeks upon entering Malta. Kenneling to meet Maltese pet requirements will be at the expense of the owner.

U.S. citizens seeking evacuation should be prepared to wait several hours. Travelers are advised to bring food, water, diapers and other necessary toiletries with them to the pier.

U.S. citizens requesting evacuation on U.S. Government-chartered transport must sign paperwork promising to reimburse the U.S. Government for transportation costs at a later date. Exact transportation costs are not yet available, but will be comparable to a one-way commercial ferry trip of a comparable distance on the date of travel. U.S. citizens who travel on U.S. Government–chartered transport will be expected to make their own onward travel plans from Malta.

Immediate family members (spouses and children) who are not U.S. citizens must be documented for entry into the safe haven country and/or the United States, if that is your final destination. A U.S. citizen child may be escorted by one adult, preferably a parent, who has appropriate travel documents. If a family has more than one U.S. citizen child, the one-adult rule still applies. All U.S. citizen travelers and their spouses and children, are required to have valid travel documents. The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli will assist U.S. citizens with travel documents. U.S. citizens who do not hold a valid U.S. passport or visa and are interested in departing Libya via U.S. Government-chartered transportation should contact the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Embassy Tripoli by sending an email to LibyaEmergencyUSC@state.gov or by calling 1-202-501-4444.

BREAKING: #Gaddafi family may have billions in secret accounts http://bit.ly/gGYXTw #Libya

...

Prof Tim Niblock, a specialist in Middle Eastern politics at the University of Exeter, England, has identified a “gap” of several billion dollars a year between the amount Libya makes from its oil reserves and government spending – a shortfall he expects has contributed greatly to the wealth of Col Muammar Gadafy and his nine children.

...

Where the Gadafys have hidden their vast funds is anybody’s guess, although Prof Niblock expected most of it was “in bank accounts and liquid assets in Dubai, the Gulf and southeast Asia” rather than in countries such as the UK, where the Libyan state has invested in property and in companies such as Pearson Group.

...

In addition to squirrelling away much of their income, the Gadafys have spent fortunes over the years “propping up” various African regimes, with Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe widely acknowledged to be among the biggest recipients, Prof Niblock said.

In the 1990s, Col Gadafy is thought to have given money to the Zaghawan tribe in Darfur “and I suspect some of them are among the African mercenaries fighting the civilians in Libya”, Prof Niblock added.

41. I've been really disappointed that Libya has not garnered nearly the attention as Egypt.
Facebook was lit up about Egypt, but not Libya, this go around. Maybe I need the right friends.

43. Egypt was a constant victory, for the most part. People like cheering for winners.
"You're bringing me down, man...."

45. True. Tunisa was over instantly, too, so people felt like they "missed the bandwagon."

48. I think them being totally cut off from the net and landlines had a lot to do with it
and no reporters on the ground to get news and pictures out.

The stories were so "fantastic" too that people probably hesitated before posting wild stories about am *ally* hiring African mercenaries to machine gun ppl in the streets, soldiers being executed and burned, mercenaries firing artillery on crowds, machine guns from helicopters, fighter jets...

Another thing is that Gaddafi's thugs had no compunction about mowing people down right after they'd given an interview or blogged.

When Egypt happened, so many Egyptians living in Egypt on the ground were tweeting. For Libya there were very few. I'm amazed they got as much information out as they did. The Egyptians really delivered for them while they were off the net.

53. Libya's been far more cut off from the rest of the world,
and not just this week.

Just a small anecdotal example, I know of plenty of people who had holidays/friends/contacts/professional relationships with people in Tunisia and Egypt, almost none in Libya. This change (and it will happen) is a chance for a big reintegration into the culture and politics of the area, and not just for someones jet-setting spawn.

in Libya -- no press. Many different locations --

Hate to tell any one when to have a revolution -- but three day holiday here --

and Wisconsin going on.

Evidently last day the press has been coming in from Egyptian border?

Can only hope that much of the Gaddafi's genocide has been recorded but just not

shown yet?

Also, 35,000 mercenaries have made it much more dangerous than Egypt --

Mercenaries riding in jeeps shooting people in the streets -- stopping people from

other areas from joining up with other protesters -- entering hospitals and killing

wounded protesters -- killing doctors -- and keeping medical aid from entering the

country -- and -- that other little thing ... bombing citizens and homes from the air!

Don't know the estimated death toll -- but last I saw was 600 and imagine wounded

are 5X as many as that.

PS: Don't want to seem to belittle what happened in Egypt!!! Extraordinary!!

Just trying to point to differences -- :)

1. They are all virgins and take a vow of chastity when becoming official bodyguards.

2. Gaddafi believes it is empowering for women to be his bodyguards. He says, “Women should be trained for combat, so that they do not become easy prey for their enemies.”

3. They are all trained killers and hand-picked by Gaddafi himself.

4. The girls wear lipstick, jewellery, polished nails, and even high heels.

5. All of his girls are said to swear an oath that they will give their lives for him and it is claimed they never leave his side, night or day.

6. In 1998 one of them was killed and seven others wounded when Islamic fundamentalists in Libya ambushed the Colonel's motorcade. The dead bodyguard, rumoured to be his favourite, threw herself across Gaddafi's body to stop the bullets.

7. Gaddafi makes the final selection and, despite his insistence that his guards are chaste, rumours abound that he demands their sexual favours.

Gaddafi's Virgin Women Bodyguards

Liberian Libyrian President Mummar Gaddafi brought his virgin female bodyguards among a 400-strong entourage on a state-visit to France. Those women clad in camouflage uniforms who are trained killers will provide the Libyan leader with 24-hour protection.
