Warning gentle du'ers but what follows is some of the art
the right wing is using to depict our fellow workers

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zWjKLU65DHk/S9Ku_rnJL5I/AAAAAAAAAoU/u2RGzKnbf6E/s400/union+thugs.jpg

Why post these examples? I want you to be aware of what is going on. This is Der Sturmer worthy... and for your comparison...

If any of you have any doubts that we need to refer to ... fascists as fascists. I have no idea when you will wake up. You may hate the idea of calling them Nazis. but those are just one variant of fascism and the ties from the leaders of our far right movement and nazi germany are deep.

So stop hiding your heads in the sand. They are coming for you... they want YOU and ME dead... period. We are less than human to this crowd... and yes it is war.

1. Totally agree...
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 10:05 PM by haikugal
We need to name what we are fighting against and it's fascism. Call them out for what they are, what their history and associations are...call them Birchers..and know what you're talking about. These are radical lunatics and we are not safe if they reach a majority in our governments across the country. The Nazis never went away, they just went underground...and they had powerful American supporters.

10. As a historian the parallels to FASCISM
as in it's classic form, are too much to ignore.

5. Morons. Complete and utter morons.
I hope when the shit hits the fan they're the first ones that get it splat in the face. They've earned it. Damn fools -- the unions are out there fighting for them, they're just too fucking stupid to know it.

8. I've never understood the whole horror of certain words thing
Words are just tools to describe things. But I've noticed, in observing others (especially here, where the average age is much older than anywhere else I hang out online - and this is also the place where people consume the most traditional media, and hmmm - I have noticed a certain tendency for the people who treat language that way to also post about watching state media TV), that some words seem to have way way more power than they should. It's almost like they bring up a certain stereotyped image in a person's mind, and the person can't see beyond that image. Like - to them, the word "fascism" always means jackboots and death camps, and they can't see all the gradations, all the steps, the process, all the iterations, all the ways things have changed since the 30s and 40s.

And no, no tinfoil hat - all the word/language/media consumption of choice stuff is born of my own thoughts and observation. I wonder - does that also have to do with the deep difference in mentalities that I've noticed between people my age (newly 30) and younger and the older set here on DU?

The medium is the message, as a wise man once said. ;)

I think denial of the word is denial of the concept. Making Nazis into a holy cow, something "other" that can never be referred to or mentioned, means you don't have to face that actually they were human, with human emotions and motivations and failings, and that yes, it can happen again and is in fact always happening, because it's the nature of our current social structure.

The names and uniforms and victims and concrete events and individual crimes against humanity change, but it's always about domination and dehumanization. It's always about the few dividing and enslaving the many. And working them to death. A death camp is very very different from fast food or Wal-Mart on the surface. I don't think anyone would deny that. But the underlying concepts are the same.

People as disposable inhuman objects to exploit for profit and sadistic lulz. A system of psychopathy and inhumanity.

It's okay, though. The internet as a medium is busy creating its message. And it's one of solidarity and humanity.

Fascism's days are numbered.

It won't go quietly and peacefully, but when is significant social change ever quiet or peaceful?

12. what you are seeing is age related
It is the people who fought them, and their kids. I am at the tail end of the last group, a kid of a holocaust survivor.

Rwanda should have been a huge wake up call, as horrific as it was... it is not unique...

Alas that is what you are seeing and you are also seeing American exceptionalism... it could not happen here.

As to the media... KY was a huge wake up call to the tweety bird... and was a pleasure to see. It was the first time I think, the media realized, yes it can and IS happening here.

9. George Mosse knew.
And he left us the legacy of his knowledge.

Nazi Culture: Intellectual, Cultural and Social Life in the Third Reich, (c) 1966.

Anyone who thinks it can't happen again is. . . . uninformed.

17. That would be an interesting discussion to have some day
I think of Shirer more as a reporter, Mosse as an historian. But I could be wrong, because it's been more years since I've read Shirer than since I've read Mosse.

But I think both would recognize the symptoms today as ones they were far too familiar with.
